I have fitted my Gretsch G5700 lap steel with Duesenberg multibenders on strings 2 and 3 (each raising the note, 0.5 and 1 tone respectively) and I'm using DADF#AD tuning as recommended by many players and used as standard by Duesenberg on their Pomona guitars. However, I have found that even using 0.018 to 0.062 strings, the lower strings don't sound well. And for emulating a pedal steel, I'm constantly using the area above the 12th fret octave position for those steelie licks. The open D chord isn't really much use as it's too low.
I am therefore considering fitting a set of strings tuned GDGBDG (i.e. a 4th up from the current open D tuning) so that I can access those higher notes and chords more easily, but keep the same bender settings for those standard pedal steel licks.
I already play G dobro (GBDGBD), so I'm looking for a different sound from this guitar, hence the non-standard G tuning. I'm afraid I spent some time with an E9 pedal steel but found it more than a little mind-blowing and that some rather standard pedal steel licks weren't possible on it.
Has anyone any experience with this G tuning (GDGBDG)?
