Wanted: A lightweight steel with a small case

Postby EgmaFromel » Wed Mar 19, 2025 9:36 am

I'm on the hunt for a small, lightweight steel that comes in a natty little case. Something like a GFI S10 student model. I'm excited (and nervous) to be flying out a few times this year, and I'm not strong enough to lug a lot of weight around airports (and want to avoid extra package charges). Not looking for anything too fancy, as this would be a back up to my current PSG, and really for travelling purposes only.

Looking for E9 emmons, 3x4 preferably, but 3x2 is okay.

Thanks,
Emma

I think you are chasing the end of the rainbow looking for a lightweight playable guitar, I dont carry anything any more just a lightweight fold up trolley for about 20 quid is by far your best option, if your determind to go that way there is a Bennett Freshman student model advertised for 1200 that would give you a slight weight reduction with its none adjustable legs (just take a few beer mats with you for levelling) but the guitar will work ok.
As promised, some pics of my latest find an Ernie Ball pedal steel, at this time 3 plus 1 pull release
If I can add lever/s.and make it playable woul sell about 5/600 but weight saving would be minimal.....

Buy a folding trolley ....less than 20 quid.

Hi John,

Thanks for the information on the steels. I definitely am chasing a rainbow, but in its case my Shobud is over weight for luggage and in some scenarios it'll be cheaper for me to buy a 2nd seat for the PSG instead of checking it, and having dragged a PSG up and downs the steps to the plane last year, shaving off even a few lbs feels worth it. Even if it comes at the cost of not sounding as good. Either way, travelling with a slightly lighter, less valuable set up will probably make things easier for me. If custom cases seemed to be more of a thing over here, maybe trying to shave of lbs with a smaller, lighter case would be the thing.

Non-adjustable legs is a bit of an issue as Im 5'5", currently I have my front legs at 60cm and back 65cm (body to floor) - which is as short as I can get them, and I still have to wear heeled boots to play comfortably. Looks like the Ernie Ball (never seen of those before!) looks like it's non-adjustable too? That thing must be pretty light? Although maybe not in that case
