Sho Bud Maverick

....What do members think of the Maverick...I know it's a student model....is it a good idea to follow that route, or better to go for a full blown model from the start?

I should say that I've played lap style for some years (lots actually... )

I've been offered the Maverick on a loan basis.....a pal has had one in the attic for years
....God knows what he paid for it, or what I might offer him now....any thoughts???

I've never bothered with 'student' guitars, and have always gone for the real deal

The Maverick was good 30 odd years back ( i had one - it was nothing to write home about )
it is presently outdated
the Mav' had 3 pedals & 1 knee lever
whereas present day student models have 3 pedals & 3 to 5 levers

if your buddy let's you take the Mav' to try out, i'll say go for it & see how you get on w: it
one can still play quite a bit of stuff w: just one knee lever
it's also worthy to note that you can also find yourself a good used pro model psg

"Maverick" covers a multitude of sins. Some were awful, some OK - none were great all-round. Without going too deep, certain models had effective but basic mechanics with uninspiring tone and looks, others had fairly good tone, reasonable looks and unstable tuning. Depends on the model and money. Fine to borrow though! Find out if it has the fretboard glued flat on the carcass, or if it has a seperate "neck". Colour can be telling (the architypal brown vinyl?), if it has a non-roller nut (generally these were coloured laquer) and also, what's it made of?
The first problem with almost all student models is the knee lever set-up. Some cannot raise and lower the same string and you'll need to do that fairly soon into your learning curve.
