Anyone travelling south collect guitar for John ?

This is where you can rest a while and discuss anything - doesn't have to be steel guitar related!

Ah well .....It would have been nice to have been consulted by the admin, as it was my post, and I didn't see or read anything insulting or offensive. I suppose some are more equal than others. It's a strange Forum when one's own post can be deleted by someone else without any prior request or complaint having been made. Did the post insult anyone ? If so, why wasn't I informed or a post put up to explain the deletion. Yes it was suggestive, but are we not all grown ups here....maybe not.
What a sad day

it was a bit like that iconic 'monty python' scene all them years ago, with the naked piano player, i thought it was quite amusing, but perhaps the steel world in general is not quite ready for the first naked steel player, give it time, perhaps in the future we might even have a steel players 'calender? ? ? or on second thoughts, no, that would be scary

Fair play please....

Postby bazzrd9th » Sat Aug 27, 2011 5:30 pm

My post (re the collection of Johns steel, and with the added risque picture) had been deleted by the administrators for no apparent reason.

John asked for it to be deleted and it was.
John has apologised for not getting in touch to ask for it to be deleted which is fine. I accepted his apology.
That the admin acceded to this request without any reason or communication is stunning.
There were no complaints put up, it wasn't insulting to anyone, nor was any bad language involved. I'm amazed that it can be so summarily acceded to without any justification I still don't know why it was deleted........
Is an oligarchy at work here ?
Come on admin...let's here from you....If I've insulted anyone or stepped over the mark....fine, but no communication or explanation has been offered.
It would be nice to know the crime before the sentence.

i saw the post in question, and i was actually quite amused by it, but at the end of the day, you have to respect other peoples sensibilities, not everyone shares your [or my] sense of humour and devilment, and you have to be aware of that, and thats where admin come in, i have had a post or two deleted in the past, when maybe i verbally overstepped the mark, and i wasn't consulted or offered an explanation, nor did i seek one, admin are doing what admin should be doing, if i had posted that pic and had it deleted, i wouldnt have started whinging on about it, i would have just accepted that admin didnt want a picture of a naked man behind the steel guitar that he was posting about, accept it and get over it, dont turn devilment  into embarrassment, as i said, it didnt offend me, i actually posted a reply which was also deleted, and thats ok by me, i love to see amusing post and pics, but somebody has to have the authority to monitor and delete content if it over steps [in their opinion] the mark,
its not the end of the world and nobody died ! ;)

OK, here's what happened...

I received a PM from JohnDavisStringsHere with a request to delete the topic. Any such request would normally be granted if the reason behind it is that someone - anyone - either:-

  • finds it offensive or
  • if the thread starter requests it's deletion (as long as there haven't been too many replies).
Now, I know John didn't start the thread but it was started to find a way of getting a steel delivered to him, and it had served it's purpose. So, as per John's request the thread was quarantined (not deleted).

I apologise if it's apparent deletion upset anyone, but in this case it was moved because one of it's two main participants requested it's deletion, and not due to it's contents. Whether the contents were offensive to anyone or not was, therefor, irrelevant.

For the record I personally didn't see anything wrong with the content - you might remember I actually "stickied" it shortly after you posted so that it stayed at the top of the thread list! No-one was guilty of any crime and there was no sentence.

As you wish, the thread has been reinstated (and merged with the threads discussing it's apparent deletion)!

Eddie, I wasn't naked....though you can't see that.....that was the point. Yes there has to be an authority to control and adjudicate, but who monitors authority ?...that's where democracy comes in and where your voice and opinions should count, and democracy means consultation, not arbitrarily taking selective decisions to suit a society's main shakers and movers. You have as much and equal say as I have, and I respect that, regardless of the content of your blog.
I can understand deletion if it was really offensive...I don't mind deletion if I was contacted and asked if I'd mind if it was deleted as someone found it offensive....It's not a personal thing and I'm not railing against anyone personally, Eddie, you can't quantify a principle.
So if I react to someone elses thread if I don't like the content, reasonable or not, I can have it deleted ??? for no good reason ???......I don't think so, nor would I ever request such a move. It goes against my beliefs.
Arcada.
The fact that you apologize for the deletion and the fact that you have re-instated it, says something about your actions, you mention it's two main participants, you acceded to John's request, if I was the other main participant, why was I not at least informed ? I really don't care if the original post is re-instated or not...that's not the point. I quote arcada "it was moved because one of it's two main participants requested it's deletion, and not due to it's contents . Whether the contents were offensive to anyone or not was, therefor, irrelevant." unquote

John has made good his point, and being a reasonable person I accede to his wishes. I love the bones of John, he is a genuinely great guy and has done more than most for the steel community.
A sad day indeed

Every single post has a "Report Post" icon above it (it's the exclamation mark in an upside-down triangle) which anyone can use. Anyone can also PM a moderator or admin at any time. If there's a valid reason for a post / topic removal then it will be removed.

I apologised if the removal upset anyone, and I re-instated the topic because John rescinded his original request (the sole reason it was originally removed). I really don't see it as that big a deal. When I removed it I didn't think you'd have to be informed as you would be aware of the removal when you saw it had gone. And you weren't warned (there's a second icon, "Warn User", on every post which is only visible to moderators) as you had done nothing wrong.

bazzrd9th wrote:A sad day indeed

Not really (imho). It'd be a sad day if we ignored such requests altogether. The rule that only a topic starter can request it's removal was bent slightly to include John in this case partly as he was named in it's title, partly because it had served it's purpose (in finding transport for the steel in question)...

and partly because he's made over 300 posts more than you - (joke! )
