12 String Lap Steel String Gauges

Postby Ajak » Wed Feb 07, 2024 7:25 pm

I have a MSA Superslide Lap Steel with this tuning:

Will I be able to tune these string gauges to the required pitches without breaking strings? :|

Your going to break strings.
A lot depends on the overall string length (that includes the bit behind the nut to tunning key).

On an E9th Pedal steel the 3rd string is G#(4) and gets pulled to A(4) which requires an 11 or 12 ( we still get breakage occaisionally)
there is no way an E(5) could get to pitch without breaking even with an 11.

Now if you tune similar to an E9Th pedal steel then your high E would be an E(4) in wich case you have the gauges there already, you just need to switch the 11 to your 3rd string, 13 to string 1 tuned E(4) not E(5) and 14 to your C#(4). then your good to go!

Is there a reason you wish to use a 20W for the 6th string? On Pedal it's commonly an 18 plain...

Hope this helps...
