Lap steel wanted

Postby Goosander » Tue Jan 09, 2024 12:20 pm

Hello,

I am on the lookout for a lap steel that would suit a Hawaiian/swing repertoire (C6 tuning). Preference towards a shorter scale length. A 6 or 8 string are both fine

Budget-wise there is some movement, but ideally I would be looking to spend under £1000 for something I won’t need to replace in the future

Based in the North East and willing to travel within reason/consider delivery

Thanks :D

I am jusr curious, why pref. Short scale? You have a reasonable budget to get what you want but the longer scale seems to be far more sought after from what I have seen.... does it makes slants easier? I dont know I am not a plank player.

I'm new to steel guitar so I don't have the experience to say. Based on the reading I've done it just seems like 22.5" is the preferred scale length for Hawaiian music due to ease of slants (I'm open to being corrected though!)

A shorter scale length does make lap steel slants more acheivable as does wider string spacing….you can find out all you ever need to know about the slantibility of different lap steels here: https://www.hawaiiansteel.com/instrumen ... angles.php

may well be so but methinks when you get above the 12th fret would be more dificult to be accurate as frets get closer together...... ?
