"wah wah"

Having made a lap steel recently, I like to play along with - in particular - Wayne Hancock. He has great roster of lap-steel players, Eddie Rivers & Jeremy Wakefield in particular. I love their use of a "wah wah" sound (which is not an actual wah-wah as in the Cry Baby), so when I built my own I made sure I fitted a 1 meg pot on the tone. However, I don't understand how these players are able to play complicated runs while wahwah-ing the pot. Do they use a pedal ... and if so, which?? I love the sound!

Actually I've answered my own question!! They DO use wah-wahs (allegedly) however the Cry-Baby I bought from a charity shop for £15 was very harsh, extreme and 70's sounding. However thanks to YouTube I've found out you can adjust the travel of the pot and I've made it sound more like my 1 meg tone pot!!

WOW! Yes, thanks for the tip. Also caught Buddy Merrill (his tone control is same place as mine) and he manages it by slamming the steel down on the strings while wah-wah-ing the tone control!

BTW re: the pedal, the Cry-Baby wrecks the tone of the instrument, so that's out. I'll be trying the Buddy Merrill / Kayton Roberts technique (Speedy West too!)
