Friday's string question

Postby Uncle Roy » Fri Sep 02, 2022 8:06 am

I was wondering how many of us clean their strings after playing using just a cloth
or products like ghs fast fret string cleaner & lubricant or never bother?

Hi Roy, I generally just use a clean cloth. I have on occasion used products such as fast fret but only once in a while. Interesting to know how many people clean the underside of the strings, possible to do on a steel guitar, a bit harder on a six string!

I have used Blitz cloth for many years,I do not clean My strings after every time I play. I bought the Blitz cloth from Herb Steiner when I was at the Dallas show.

Hi Roy, on the odd occasion I did a gig (mainly in pubs) I gave the strings (Emmons nickel S.I.T.s as supplied by JD) a wipe down, top and bottom, with a J-Cloth, on account of my excessively sweaty mitts.
Unlike Andy Windsor, I sweat like a paedo when under pressure.

I use Fastfret (or a similar Dunlop product someone gave me) only occasionally, including the underside. I have dry hands and have never affected strings. I have a pal (standard guitar player) who can wreck a set off one touch!!!

I always make a point of cleaning both the top and the underside of my strings when playing Dobro. On my steel I always clean the top of the strings from habit.

Another Blitz cloth user here Roy, given to me by Herb Steiner after I bought his C6 chord finder course. I use it after ever gig, session and practice time.

Fortunately I don't suffer from sweaty hands, but I had one late friend who could kill my pedal steel strings in 5 minutes with his sweaty hands. Because he used to play Day set up, he would have a go on my steel after the show if he came to one of my gigs. But after he passed away, his widow gave me over 100 brand new sets of E9 and C6 that he had just imported. I thanked him in my prayers after that. I now have over 200 sets of strings which should see me out.

I use this product to store my strings in an airtight environment.
