As for my sound: I think it's acceptable, no more than that. I think the sound I actually get (in the room) is significantly better, but mic-ing it up and capturing it takes forever, and often doesn't end up working, so I tend nowadays to go for the easy and lazy option, i.e. straight out of the back of the amp into my interface. To me, the bass becomes a bit plummy and the life of the sound is sucked out slightly, but it's a compromise. We all love the sound of the steel, but I've had to sacrifice some of that to get on with improving my playing, which is my main priority. And, yes, recording with a camcorder or (as in my case when doing videos) a camera is very problematic.
And yes, as my 'variations in D' (sounds grand) went on I progressed up the neck of the steel, with the inevitable ear-piercing consequences!!
But I couldn't resist going too far (as always).
