This is the worst news anyone could have. Dave had a real strong influence on me when I was thinking of starting out on steel. He lived in my village for a while when he was playing for The Gary Blackmore Band, and I can remember going to his house with my pal Jim Smith, who we lost a few months ago, and he was playing around on his Shobud.
I was in ore of his playing and remember thinking, Christ he is brilliant, one day I want to be able to play like that. He was showing us how to play the Jerry Garcia progressive run in Hello Mary Lou by The new riders of the purple sage using the 2nd and 4th string once I finished building my first steel, that was the first thing I played.
Once I got up and playing properly so to speak, I managed to share the stage quite often with Dave, sometimes in a band called Blue Country, we would both have our steels on stage and swap between Tele and steel throughout the evening.
On one occasion I was half way through an instrument break on steel, and Dave wandered over to me Just before taking his break, I was expecting a compliment, but with a glint in his eye, he whispered in my ear and said’ That was bloody Rubbish’
Dave has been a seriously tough and fit man in his youth, I met Billy Jo Spears in St Louis, and told her I was a friend on Dave, and she told me that when he was in her band, he would ask the tour bus driver to let him know, when they were about ten miles from the Gig, so he could let him off, so he could Jog the rest of the way. She also said he was the one in the Band that ‘talked funny’!
I joined a country band where Carol was the Bass player, and their previous Steelie was Dave, what an act to follow, they said my playing style was very similar to Dave, what they didn’t know, was that was because I had been watching him for so long, I did my best to nick his runs and style, but knew I could never match his quality.
Anyone who ever saw Dave play, may have seen him smile while he was playing, I believe that was because he really enjoyed what he was doing, I am often accused of looking miserable when playing, and if I feel I am not looking happy, I try to remember Dave and once again try to mimic him.
Carol and send prayers all the love possible to Dave and Pauline
