The Hair Steel Dichotomy

This is where you can rest a while and discuss anything - doesn't have to be steel guitar related!

The Hair Steel Dichotomy

Postby Danny Mitchell » Mon Nov 16, 2020 2:41 pm

Having, some years ago, been forced to move from 'The Ricky Nelson' to 'The David Nixon', I've noticed that the number of hirsute steel players greatley outweighs those follicilly challenged.
Could this covering of the napper help in any way that, so far, hasn't been realised? Should those of us in the 'shiny' camp start donning the 'Irish', to improve our facility on the steel?
There are of course exceptions, and three that I've come across are, Messrs, Holland, Johnston and Byng, but I've also observed that these excellent players sometimes sport the 'titfer' of the 'cowboy' and 'baseball' varieties. Could this be the answer? Having started my steel journey whilst at an advanced state of follicle deprivation, I'm now wondering if I've been fighting a battle that I was always destined to lose.

All the young dudes need not respond. (Those shaggy m#therf@ckers and their slick pickin' make me sick!)

As one of those that you correctly identified with a follicular affliction Danny, I thought I'd better wave the flag for all of us slaphead steel players.

When I first met him, Tommy White had a full head of head, which is sadly rapidly ebbing these days. But he has a renowned competitor coming up on the rails. None other than Paul F. Paul's cranium covering is thinning too, whereas he had a full head of hair complete with pony tail just a few short years ago. Now these two guys could be argued by some as being the top guns in steel guitar land. Bruce Bouton is a fully paid up member of our shiny headed brethren, as was legendary steeler Tom Brumley. Our own Gerry Hogan also reflects the spotlights from the stage, an occupational health hazard for audiences by all of us bald headed ba :censored: ds. So Danny, I think we're all in pretty good company actually.

How dare you sir, I resemble that remark, being follicolly challenged does not hinder your dexterity on the pedal steel guitar. What you have to do is sit your immense arseom delecteom (latin) on the seatery (old scots) and f :censored: g practice. When you have reached the level of dexterity required, you can then go and buy yourself a syrup. LDN.

Doesn't do Vin Diesel, Jason Statham and Terry Crews any harm.

Just bench press your steel and make us young scrawny :censored: s look less impressive.

Ken mentioned Tom Brumley, once upon a time he had a thick head of wavey hair and then like some of us oldies it waved goodbye. When he lost it he looked a bit like Roger Decourcey without Nookie bear. Didnt stop him from being a great player. Hair today gone tomorrow i suppose.
Maybe 4 of us should start a band we could call it the Four Skins.
Anyway Im thinking of having a tatoo on my bonce  , any suggestions.

Hi Paul. Perhaps you could try a rabbit. From a distance it might look like a hare.
All the best, John.

Ken,
I thought I'd set the bar high mentioning your good self, Donny and Davie, but that 'shining' parade of killer, slaphead players you've flagged up has put my mind at rest, and I thank you

Donny,
I think you might've picked me up wrongly  , I meant that Ken, Davie and your good self, Lord Donald of Newmilns, were the exceptions to the rule, and only that it may apply to the likes of The Liver Spot Kid of Hillington (me)

Steven,
I've never heard of any of those steel players, but I'll take your word for it that they're no' bad.
And may I add, that you fall into the demographic that were requested not to respond, ya hairy, young mofo

Paul,
I once had occasion to back DeCourcey(not a euphimism) in a cabaret club in Cleethorpes, in the seventies, and even then his barnet resembled the candy floss they sold on the pier.
Regarding the tattoo suggestions. I attended a fancy dress party and had only drawn a 'jap's eye' on my head. Everyone, to a man, thought I looked a proper bellend. Job done

Having a shiny bonce hasn't held back any of these tremendous pickers.

And while I exclude myself from the pics of 'tremendous pickers', here I am projecting plenty of stage lights back at the audience. :D :D

At least you've got stage presence. I have to put chavy car neons under mine to borrow any of the spotlight from the singer.
