Tony, don't forget that the bar rests on the strings and you should only guide it. Don't hold it too tight and you'll avoid most cramp problems. Here's a picture I used to show a certain slant bar technique, but you can see the state of my fingers - but I can still push the bar around!

Tony - If it were me I'd go for a hollow stainless bar or one of Basil's polymer bars which grip amazingly well.

Ben Burrows' bars are incredible value for money.
