Tae a virus

Twa months ago, we didna ken,
yer name or ocht aboot ye
But lots of things have changed since then,
I really must salute ye

Yer spreading rate is quite intense,
yer feeding like a gannet
Disruption caused, is so immense,
ye’ve shaken oor wee planet.

Corona used tae be a beer,
they garnished it wae limes
But noo it’s filled us awe wae fear
These days, are scary times.

Nae shakin hawns, or peckin lips,
it’s whit they awe advise
But scrub them weel, richt tae the tips,
that’s how we’ll awe survive

Just stay inside , the hoose, ye bide
Nae sneakin oot for strolls
Just check the lavvy every hoor
And stock-take, your, loo rolls

Our holidays have been pit aff
Noo that’s the Jet2 patter
Pit oan yer thermals, have a laugh
And paddle ‘ doon the waater ‘
Canary isles, no for a while
Nae need for suntan cream
And awe because o this wee bug
We ken tae be..19

The boredom surely will set in,
But have a read, or doodle
Or plan yer menu for the month
Wi 95 pot noodles.

When these run oot, just look aboot
A change, it would be nice
We’ve beans and pasta By the ton
and twenty stane o rice.

So dinny think yell wipe us oot
Aye true, a few have died
Bubonic, bird flu, and Tb
They came, they left, they tried

Ye might be gallus noo ma freen
As ye jump fae cup tae cup
But when we get oor vaccine made
Yer number will be up.

Now we is all locked down no excuse for not getting seat time in I have moved in with the lady I am carer for and my steel has moved in with me! Nothing but practise for at least 3 months maybe 6! This is golden opportunity for improvement.......

Love it Robert, thanks for posting it

I too was force fed Burns at school, like all Scots I guess. Fortunately I was able to get over it and have read all of Burns work, including his songs, hard work as you have to keep referring to translations from old Scots. I can quite honestly say the man was a genius, not only for the way he constructed his poems but for the way he took something simple, everyday, and put a meaning to it that ordinary folk could relate to. As in To a Louse.

Good to see the tradition continues.

A very tenuous but nevertheless real link between Burns and pedal steel guitar. Some of you may be familiar with a couple of tracks Gary Carter plays on his CD, A Lighthouse Tale and When You Come Down. These are songs which were originally written and performed by a US trio called Nickel Creek. Nickel Creek was/is 3 young very talented musicians playing guitar, fiddle and mandolin with great singing voices.

After hearing Gary's versions of their songs I bought one of their CD's, which has a song written using a Burns poem for the lyrics, called Sweet Afton.

From wikipedia,

Written by Burns in 1791[1] and set to music by Jonathan E. Spilman in 1837, under the title Flow gently, sweet Afton. This "poem" was originally published by Burns in the Scots Musical Museum as a song, still sung today as published.

Little known fact, Burns desperately wanted to be a singer when he was young, his mother was apparently a renowned singer of the traditional Scottish songs which were passed down by ear through the generations. Burns decided to write down a lot of these songs so they wouldn't be lost, he wrote lyrics for songs which had none.

It turned out he was totally tone deaf and people would flee if he started to sing So he accepted it was never going to happen and decided to become a poet as the next best thing.
