Hi Rich
I think they’re saying that what you have to do is find, by trial and error, the best crank positions for the 9 and 2 pulls that gives you the nearest to a perfect result. Start with the tone lower on 2, and then have 9 kicking in at the half way point so that you can feel the semitone drop on 2. Then if you go all the way down, if 9 is going too far then its rod needs moved to a crank position nearer the crossrod until you can hit all the notes more or less in tune. Another variable is the overall amount of travel on the knee lever, adjustable by its end stop. And you might need to experiment with the crank position for 2 as well. I had to do it this way on my old LDG and found it worked well but took a while to find the magic positions. And if you change string gauges, you have to start over. By far the nicest solution is an extra rod either on 9 or 2 giving you more control. Even then, getting the crank positions in the right ballpark to start with makes the half stop feel better. I’m spoilt now as my MSA has end stop ‘split screws’ that let you tune the lowest point of travel for each lower but I still have a good few split tuning rods elsewhere for tuning other combinations.
An afternoon should do it and you’ll be very happy when you find the sweet spot!
Cheers
