Depends on what you mean by needs to be replaced. Is it broken or just that you don't like the sound?
Those who have dabbled in making their own lap steel have tended to go for bass guitar blade type pickups as the length is just about right. As for a purpose made one then it's either back to Ron Bennet or JAG pickups which apparently are quite good.
If it is the sound then I would say persevere. Guitarists are always looking for different pickups to put in their guitars only to go back to the original. When I got my Nationals I was going to have pickups rewound etc but then with touch etc got a good sound, and even though they are microphonic (which is a design fault) I am now loath to change them, and everyone comments on the tone.
