stringmaster nut screws

Postby andrew » Wed Oct 24, 2018 5:49 pm

Hi
Does anyone know a source for screws suitable for a stringmaster nut? I have measured one and they appear to be a #2 x 3/4" phillips dome head. I can't seem to find anything in that specification anywhere - the smallest wood screws most places sell are a #4
Any help would be very much appreciated.
thanks, Andrew

Hi Andrew, I get most of my screws from Allparts uk, worth a punt??? Also Guitar n Blues have loads, although they are in Nantes, but the are good...not too sure if they send to UK, because they also do lots of Allparts stuff.

Best of luck

Thanks for the input Maurice - I've tried Allparts to no avail. The problem is that these screws are really quite small with tiny heads and nothing else will do. I may have to go down the route of a custom order, though I can't imagine that is going to be cheap...

Hi Andrew, have you tried any local guitar techs? The guy that sets up my guitars has a good stock of all manner of esoteric bits and pieces - to the point where I've taken in guitars held together with the 'wrong' screws, and they have come back with the right ones, all as part of the service!
Just thought it may be worth a try. Or if you can find some screws with the right thread you could feasibly turn down the heads carefully in a small lathe?

Hi Andrew, me again,
Have you trawled through Stewart MacDonald's site? They carry one hell of a load of spare parts screws etc. They've helped me in the past quite a bit, but for me here in France anything I get from them usually has a load of import duty on it. Plus French customs in Lille seem to hang onto stacks of gear before they release it...never had that problem in the UK...but life over this side of the channel is a whole lot easier and cheaper!!! I have a good luthier not too far from me so if you can give me the full size of the screws in mm I'll see what he has or can do.
Any good???? by the way I'm over in UK for Xmas / New Year and could possibly be close to Wigton Lane for a couple of days.
Best of luck Maurice

Hi Maurice
Thanks for your help. Stewmac doesn't have what I need. I have modified my requirement and have some that may just about do - it's impossible to find any the same as the Stringmaster ones, they have such tiny heads, but fortunately I am not actually after a direct Stringmaster replacement - I am intending on producing my own barrel nuts so I can adapt to fit to a certain extent. It's still a bit tricky as they have to be small enough to fit comfortably between the strings but long enough to hold the nut in place. I think I have found something that will just about do the job.
If you are in the area over Xmas drop me a line and we can meet up over a beer to talk steel guitars in French!
Cheers, Andrew
