Rodding Chart

Since rebuilding my MSA as Ext E9, Ive been making numerous tweaks and changes and i was finding my scribbled notes harder and harder to follow. If I have to take a rod out of a crank, two minutes later I have no memory of where it used to be! So I wanted a record of what I've got and also a way to see at a glance if there's anything that could be better - for instance where I can make a pull easier or harder. All I've ever seen on line is lots of lists of numbers and letters which is not the easiest to follow so I came up with this on a spreadsheet.

Still a work in progress but at least I've got a record of where I'm at!

I have found the easiest way to keep track when messing with pull rods is to whip out my iPhone and photograph the undercarriage and the the end plate where the nylon tuners are.

Photos are a good idea too but I found this chart really helpful and spotted a couple of things that could be better before I’d even finished it. No problem to talk it over with you next time I’m being ‘Coshed’ Danny!
The compensators are to sort the G# issue plus adjust the c#’s to handle both 6’s and 9’s. In the Just intonation I’m using, they’re different notes. The extra one on string 9 brings my newly flattened ‘Harmonic seventh’ back up a bit when it needs to be a maj 7th.

As usual for early morning, I'm talking rubbish on the string 9 thing. Ive actually got it going down a little on the maj7 to match where A and B live. Never post about this stuff unless you're at the steel!

You’re a bad person Danny, posting pictures of a mans undercarriage before he’s had a chance to polish his parts! Nice shoes though! I’ll need to post another chart as it’s out of date. I found that just by writing it all down I spotted several things that could be improved. Seem to have settled down at last thankfully.......

Here's the 'final' version. One of the main things I spotted in the original was that I had quite a few lowers that were in higher up holes on the changer. That meant they were nearer the axle and therefor harder to pull than they needed to be. Also having the chart to hand meant that if I felt that something could 'feel' better, all I had to do was look and see if there was a fix available. Meant I was turning the guitar upside down with a plan instead of hoping for the best. A worthwhile exercise.
