Well ya know sometimes you've just got to put your hand up and say I might have got that one wrong. One of the reasons I went with Sids settings is that it is the same for both open and pedal/knee values and seemed to simplify the process and it sounded pretty good with a few tweaks. Malcolm your advice has always been spot on in the past, so I decided to try out the Newman settings for Universal as in the link below,
https://b0b.com/wp/?page_id=1505This involved setting up 5 separate temperment profiles in Pitchlab Pro, as there are different settings for the same notes depending on context, as follows,
(1) open strings
(2) pedals ABC
(3) knees
(4) pedals 4,5 & 6
(5) pedal 7
Tuning my pedal 0 by ear and few other notes not in the Newman copedent. It may be possible to consolidate these into less profiles but I just wanted to see how it sounded so may try consolidating later.
I have to admit after a few tweaks mainly on the F value, it sounds a lot more consistent and in tune than Sids, so will be sticking with this. Not sure how the Peterson tuner would handle this, certainly being able to have different values for the same notes in different octaves would certainly help.
Taking up your point Calum, it does no harm at all to challenge accepted norms and see if they stand up under scrutiny. As you rightly point out different guitars different values etc, however guys like Jeff Newman have obviously put a lot of time into working out the complex relationships you have between notes, and how they relate in different inversions, and doing some fine tuning tweaking to suit your particular setup and guitar using the fruits of their research does seem to work. However am also looking forward to what you come up with, well through the temperament book, really interesting.
At the end of the day, less time tuning means more time playing, which is all I want to do these day
I will probably go for a Peterson for my combined xmas/birthday present my birthday is the 28th Dec. Malcolm why do you prefer the Stroboflip to the HD, what are the differences, can you connect a lead straight into the Strobflip for example.
