LEMAY Mk1 STEEL GUITAR PRE-AMP

Postby Ken Byng » Sun Mar 25, 2018 6:41 pm

I'm posting this for my mate Spencer Scott. It's a top quality pre-amp designed by electronic guru John Lemay. Team this up with any amp that's got a pre-amp in socket and you have the ultimate device for dialling in a great tone. Spence is looking for offers around £400, with the buyer arranging collection from Spence. Please send a PM on here to Spence direct. Thanks.

Just for information:

This is the later model LeMay preamp - The early model was AC powered, the later model is 24VDC powered, this means you can use the International PSU and use it worldwide.
It's a handy preamp for studio use and superbly well designed. In a studio you can feed it into a power amp and speaker to move air, whilst still monitoring via the studio headphone mix. The XLR balanced line Direct Out feeds directly to the recording desk, but this output isn't modeled. So if used with DAW software or plug-ins that apply power-amp and speaker emulation, it's the perfect preamp for the job.

I should also mention, many of these units were snapped up by bass players. The headroom and 'musical' EQ apparently works well with bass. Of course, you also need a good power-amp and bass cab.

Hope you're doing okay Spencer.

All the best

Thanks Mark. Spence will appreciate your comments.

Wasn't there a tie-in with John LeMay and Telonics? Regards, Ken.

Yes Ken. After working on the FP-100 pedal, Telonics (Dave Beaty) and John LeMay teamed up to design the LeMay preamp. John's a well respected engineer, I believe he worked on the desks at the famous Sound City Studio in it's heyday. He was one of the first people to modify Peavey amps, selling the famous LeMay kits. His understanding of electronics is quite special. Having messed with numerous circuit configurations and devices over the years, he realised like Rupert Neve, after taking general specification out of the equation, some circuitry just sounds better. Dave's knowledge in this area is also pretty impressive, so yes, Dave and John designed it and Telonics engineers produced and manufactured it. In many ways it's the embryonic version of the Telonics combo.

Cheers

I played the pedal steel part in this song. I used the exact same preamp through a Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 interface straight into my PC.

I've always done this...I sometimes think people must assume it's automatic...it isn't! Maybe I'll stop...
