Thanks Will, you're absolutely right! I should have used Roman numeral notion to avoid the confusion - what I meant by 6 minor was the minor triad with its root on the sixth note of the [major] scale, which I would normally denote as VIm (or vi), and definitely NOT a minor 6th chord. Love your tip for PSG for the Dm6 resolving to A by the way - I will try to sneak that in to something as soon as I can

All I can say is, thank the 'Dear Lord' he gave me organs! No not Hammonds (though I have one and none better!)
Just the ones I was born with!! .... Suffice to say I have somewhere to hang my specs!

That's what I use for a minor sixths with floating fifths .........and as for triads.... Well I'm still working on my martial arts skills but I have a few moves well honed!!

Not sure why the view of "Theory is a drag or too much" it isn't .

Theory doesn't magically come and shouldn't be deemed so. Many musicians have gone down this route and 20 or more years later ALL realise that its beneficial and wish they started it at the beginning.

Music is a language - point blank period. - EVEN I wished I realised this the first time I approached ANY instrument

Language has a few major areas - I'll draw examples based on music

Listening - listen to the types of music you enjoy over and over
Speaking - practice whatever you are perfecting with good intonation, timing, tone etc. Being able to communicate an idea clearly to others as well
Reading - Associating the notation with your instrument means you will be on your way to fretboard mastery - this takes TIME but every tuning has a pattern.
Writing - Means you can share ideas, create music on the fly and teach others

If I had an Foreign language teacher who did not teach these basic skills from the outset how can I be expected to freely utilise that language down the road. Well music is a foreign language. But with LOTS of work and dedication it can become a second language.

Tricks and shortcuts exist in any language but become clearly more of a disadvantage in the long run if the person is asked to apply what they know in a different context.

PS - I know many will hate this approach or concept and are more than happy just noodling songs

But the advice I have given you is the fastest way to master any language and express your ideas freely in any context.

A friend reminded me the other day as I spoke about my 3 year goals now one year in of focused study. (She was a classical pianist and scored music for many years) She said "Learning an instrument to any decent level takes about 4 years of measured study before you will be reasonably fluent in ALL aspects, reading, writing etc)

So now I have changed my learning plan to a 4 year period and I am understanding why.

So you are not alone in your study and it may seem like a mountain to climb but hey 4 years aint that long. Its only one Olympics away.

Thanks for all your answers chaps.but can I point out that I'm still a novice re C6 lap steel,so long posts about one person's ideas on music theory,and also posts re pedal steels etc do nothing but to confuse me.
I've got all the info I need for now on three chord tricks thanks,I'd really appreciate it if Admin could now lock this thread,in order to stop anymore posts that have nothing to do with my original question.
