The best aluminium and metal polish?

Postby Ken Byng » Mon May 29, 2017 5:43 pm

One of my pupils asked me today what is the best polish to use on his pedal steel, especially the pedal rack and end-plates. I showed him what I have used over the years and found it to be very good at maintaining a mirror finish on aluminium. It's manufactured in California USA and comes under the rather quaint name of Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish. (Note the slightly different way that the Americans spell aluminium). I'm not saying that it's the best, but I find it to be very good at what it does.

Anyway, Mothers comes in a tub about 3" high, and in Walmarts in the States it can be bought for 3 or 4 dollars. Compare that to what we pay for a small tube of Solvol Autosol and Mothers can be seen to be very good value for money. It is available on eBay, for £7.94 inc free p&p. It instantly removes any oxidisation on aluminium with little effort.

Those players on the American Steel Forum who don't use Mothers tend to sing the praises of this polish as an alternative.
