Dear Sir - this may sound like a funny way of getting a message across to other PSG players but here goes. I am not a member of any forum but play PSG and am a Lloyd Green fan. There have been several discussions about Charley Pride Live at Panther Hall and wishes that it were on CD. I have recently purchased a double CD from HMV which has 4 LP's on a 2 CD box set one of which is the live one at Panther Hall. The CD is released through BGO. The number is BGOCD1181. On the Amazon UK site it is shown under Charley Pride (CD'S) - The Sensational Charley Pride/Songs of Pride Charley That Is/In Person/Just Plain Charley.
Although some of the re-mastering is not the best the "in person" i.e., Panther Hall is as good as the old LP I have.

Hoping you can inform members to check this out as I know players have wanted a CD of this for years.

Shame he is not a member, could do with some more players but he is right about that recording IMHO it stands head and shoulders above any other Charlie Pride record out there and its 99% down to Mr Green ......

Jon - the run is played mainly using the B and C pedals together. Typical Lloyd licks.

B and C pedals I can handle Ken, it's the rising 1/8th note thing he's simultaneously doing on the lower strings with his thumb that had me in knots. Might be typical for you and Lloyd but for mere mortals...! It's about a year since I tried this, clearly I was missing something really obvious so I'll give it another go. Never give up!

Jon - back in the 70's I used to dissect Lloyd's intros, solos and instrumentals to the point where it became obsessional. I had it weighed off pretty well, and pupils like Sarah Jory and others would ask me to teach them to play like Lloyd. Impossible!!! Lloyd is totally unique in his stylings, and his left hand is the secret to his playing. He frequently uses bar slants, open bass strings by pushing the bar forward covering only strings 1 - 8, and unison 4th and 1st strings. I have exchanged quite a number of emails with Lloyd over the years, and he is an interesting character to say the least. I don't always go with the premise that 'tone is all in the hands'. However I do believe that is the case with Lloyd. He finds that sweet spot on every guitar that he plays.

The Panther Hall recording is still the benchmark for great tone, and that fact is amazing when you consider how long ago it was recorded. A Sho~Bud into a Sho~Bud pot pedal into a standard Fender silverface Twin. A real full bodied tone and the playing still stands up today. Later, Lloyd had the 2 x 12" speakers taken out of his Twin, and had a 15" JBL installed. Not easy, but doable. Lloyd is a great role model to try to emulate. These days I prefer to do my own thing, but back in the day he was my biggest inspiration.

Right on the money Ken. Inspired by this I finally worked out the lick and naturally it's a lot simpler than it sounds. Still took me the best part of an hour to work out the best way to play it. I was convinced that string 10 was in there (cos it sounds so thick) with several slants but it CAN be reduced to one slant and you could even lower the 9th string to reduce one of the bar moves. The blues lick at the end can be played any number of ways but I thought it best just to keep B&C down the whole time. Got it licked!

You have nailed it Jon. I can hear what Lloyd was doing even without playing it. Just goes to show that with a bit of perseverance you can take someone's playing apart and work out exactly how they achieved it. Well done!!

I am in dropped jawed admiration at your ability to analyse stuff like that, Ken, remarkable! And your comments on dissecting Lloyd's playing are very interesting to read, thanks for sharing.

Jon, thanks for posting the tab for that fill. I'll try and muddle through my 'tablexia' and work this out. It's such a sweet lick. I must get a hold of the 'In Person' CD. It sounds like essential listening for an ageing steelie newbie (me).
