New member checking in with a question.

Postby West Ender » Tue Jan 27, 2015 10:50 pm

Hello all, Jim here.
I'm a complete newbie from the Glasgow area. My recently purchased steel (second hand ) is all well and good apart from one rod. No matter what I do the nylon tuning peg pops off every time I press the knee lever it is connected to. I've went through a number of brand new tuning pegs but while they seem to self-tap ok they don't hold when you apply pressure and they fly across the room!

Any thoughts ( on this or anything else that a Glaswegian starter needs to know). Thanks in advance.

Your question suggests to me that you have an all-pull guitar and it is not a ZB. Here's what might be wrong for starters - but there may be other things to check too.
Check that the knee lever hits the "hard" stop before the raise or lower finger bottoms out at the changer. This stop is generally a screw or bolt with a locking nut, on a bracket, set to restrict the travel of a lever or pedal. It'll be somewhere near where the lever "hinges" on the cross-rod so that some part of the lever post will bump into it and move no further. It's that hard stop that prevents you from putting too much tension against the finger.
The way most all-pulls work (ZBs are slightly different) is that you set the hard stop so the rod pulls a tad too far, then fine tune at the endplate. The pull-finger end should be "floating" and not hard up against any part of the guitar.
Good luck and let us know the result.
BTW - You should get to know Bob Adams, he's fairly local to you and is a genius steel guitar tech.

Hello Jim and welcome.
I'm afraid I can't help with your hardware problem, but I heartily recommend that you get along to the monthly meetings in Gartcosh. The lads there, the aforementioned Bob included, are extremely helpful and informative and are sure to have an answer to any steel related issues. Hopefully see you there.
