Did you ever notices Buddy's facial expressions? I've never seen him live so I'm only going on what I've seen on EweChoob and a video of the 1988 Newbury Festival. He seems to look at his fellow band members a lot, smile, laugh, giggle, cajole, etc. He's obviously thoroughly enjoying the music and the sound he's making (wouldn't you?). On another level, this is great communication with the rest of the band and really helps pull performances out of people and generally hold things together. I was in Sarah Jory's backing band once. It was very interesting to note the way she managed, through the use of body language and forceful playing, to lead the band in a completely unrehearsed half hour set of non-trivial numbers.
