Besides theory, learn about your guitar: Be bold and try and figure how it works, and CAREFULLY take sections apart and re-assemble.
There is NO substitute for knowing how it works..
There is very little difference between changing a string and changing a machine head, very little difference between adjusting a stop and replacing a rod, and so on et al..

Also check out the bona-fides of any source you obtain information from, in this day and age of the internet there is probably more bad info than good disseminated by wannabes rather than experienced tutors..

Reading this thread and learning about the PSG. I'm amazed there are some accomplished sounding players on here that are playing by ear and just knowing patterns rather than ears and theory.

I just thought I'd clarify I'm not putting anyone down for not knowing theory but just thinking how completely lost, confused and scared of taking the instrument up.

I agree, Matt. I'm 61 and just don't have the time left to accumulate a lifetime of rote learning. Knowing a little theory gives me a hand, helps me know where to look for stuff.
