yeah that's right Oct 2nd at the Moon Club, I will give you a shout if I'm down that way.

My folks live in Stroud so I'm down every so often and sometimes hook up with Dave and Austin.

Only just made the connection between your forum name and your real name!

Anyhow hope to meet you soon..

Hi Henry. I've only just picked up on your posting. That Fishman pickup in the Wechter Scheerhorn that I sold to you backalong is probably not seated properly behind the cone. Have you checked the security of the retaining nut that holds the pickup against the cone ?. Before you take anything apart just slightly turn the adjustment screw whilst plugged into an amp and see if you get a better signal by doing that. Only a fraction of a turn should be enough to see if anything changes for the better.

If that does not improve things I can PM you info on how to re seat the pickup if you need to. I found the pickup adequate for lower volume playing in small places with other acoustic instruments but certainly not up to competing with loud electric guitars in a gig.

I am fitting a Schatten RG-03 to my 70s OMI Dobro next week as I have some small venue gigs coming up. I will wait and see how that works out and if successful I can post a sound sample on this thread.

I have no experience of using the latest 'in the bridge segment' spider bridge pickups but it seems to me that the pro's are all using them.By amplifying the signal taken from the bridge the problem of the cone feeding back is eliminated. However these pickups need a good preamp to sound their best. Is anyone on this forum using that type of dobro pickup ?

cheers

Hi Dave, thanks for getting back to me.

I dont really understand what the pickup is!
Is it one of these?

I hadn't realised I should use a preamp but a lot of these websites say it's recommended.
Can anyone suggest a good preamp?

I will give the screw a turn too.

Cheers,

Henry

Hi Henry No you don't need a pre amp Henry ....the link you posted is to the newer Nashville series pickup. That's the type I was referring to as a 'bridge segment' pickup.

In the Wechter Reso I sold you is the Classic series active pickup this one...

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics ... ickup.html

The pre amp is located in the jack plug and powered by a 9 volt battery located in the guitar body. You will need to remove the cone to change the battery. Unless you have left the instrument plugged in for many hours this should not be necessary as I put a new battery in just before I shipped it to you.

Some folks do not like this type of pickup and yes it is a pain removing the cone assembly to change a battery but if set up properly they do give a reasonable sound at low/medium levels.

You may find this link useful the instructions for fitting are on this page.

Hope you get it all sorted out cheers

dave

Hi everyone, thanks for all your help.

I ended up borrowing an SM58(that's what a mate had and he said it was basically an SM57 with a vocal shield thing?)
so I used that and also recorded from the bridge pickup. it gives a dryer more brittle sound but is quite good to mix with the mic'ed sound.

this is the end product, I think my EQ'ing skills need a review next. I've got Cubase LE and it gives me a bunch of parametric EQs that I find harder to understand than the graphic ones.. :?

Fitted the Schatten RG-03 passive. This is what it sounds like direct into my laptop via usb audio interface. No EQ or anything else applied. Bear in mind my old Dobro has a stamped cone and soundwell so isn't going to have the full rich open tone of the modern reso.

Tried it last night with a fishman preamp and was very pleased with the results.

You have to use the mp3 file's address. You've put http://1drv.ms/1hxk5En, which is a link to the shared folder on OneDrive. As far as I know, OneDrive won't give you a URL direct for the file...
