Thanks Anders for your suggestions.
For what it's worth, I downloaded the vids using Download Shuttle, then converted them with SmartConverter. Simple, no what-does-that-mean questions and both free on the App store.

to play back on the iPad just download and install VLC for iOS 7.

To Haydon:
I did what Andis recommended and downloaded VLC for OS from the App Store. Then you just double click on a lesson and wait. Once it's downloaded you get a message asking how to open the download. Select VLC and wait again, after a minute VLC will open and the complete file will be there. Do the same for all of the files you require. Download speed will be dependent on your Wi-Fi speed.

after asking I suddenly realised if I copied in the URL for lesson 11 and altered the number to 12 it worked ok
