Nothing wrong with an Ernie Ball vol-pedal, especially for starters. I still use an Emmons and a Roland "potentiometer" vp for certain guitars (although I do have Hilton and Morley electronic vp's too) and, despite all the prejudices you will hear about "pot" pedals and the noise they introduce, they were all there was when I started!
