Control pot's.

Have a PA and most of the pot's are full of crap, been told to use Carburettor cleaner, it not onl dries the dust up on the track but also eats it away.
Question: will it damage the track, and has anyone used the product, the PA is in a heap on my workbench and I need to get it cleaned up and resoldered, it's a Traynor 6 channel desk.

I've use AP75 for years, it lubricates the track and does the job for me..
Switch cleaner is NOT meant for carbon track potentiometers it dries them out and is only a temporary cure.

Don't know about the greater knowledge bit Dave, maybe just greater age and more rotund..
But 'tis true, switch cleaner is for dirty switches and contacts, it's like alcohol, it evaporates and takes the shit with it, unfortunately whatever it leaves behind is dry.

Baz, not sure if your older, yur definalty more rotund (well was last time I seen you) greater knowledge? without a doubt, your a clever, well read bugger and well you know it, so does anyone on here that needs reliable advice.
My pots? at an age now where dirty squeeky pots go with my knees,back,hips,wrists,fingers, Ill get some of that AP75 next time I'm in Boots, do they do it on NHS prescrption?

It's made by STP you'll find it in SOME car accessory shops and sometimes Halfords
STP AP-75

It's a bit like WD-40 but better.


Alternatively on very bad pots I also have used and still do on occasions 3-IN-ONE "Professional "High Performance Lubricant" It contains PTFE
Polytetrafluoroethylene:-
PTFE is a fluorocarbon solid, as it is a high-molecular-weight compound consisting wholly of carbon and fluorine. PTFE is hydrophobic: neither water nor water-containing substances wet PTFE, as fluorocarbons demonstrate mitigated London dispersion forces due to the high electronegativity of fluorine. PTFE has one of the lowest coefficients of friction against any solid.

NOTE it contains CARBON the very stuff the potentiomenter track is made from, AND if the track's worn, it helps replace the crackly segments------> Why, because it has the "high electronegativity of fluorine" and under pressure from the 'Wiper in the 'Pot" it bonds to the track..

Well explained Baz, do you know anything about Ralgex and Sanotogen ?
