Tone bars

Postby BanjoTom » Mon Jul 29, 2013 9:49 am

Hi everyone,

I've been using a Dunlop 921 tone bar since I started playing last autumn, and am thinking about shifting to something a little smaller and lighter - at 3 3/4" x 1" and 11 1/2 oz it's not the nimblest of beasts.

Does anyone have any recommendations or bars they're looking to sell? BJS bars seem to be the way to go, but it looks like production's shut down at the minute...

Any advice very welcome!

Cheers,

Tom

Tom, Try and get hold of a BJS bar...they are great it will last you forever...try Mark Dunn, he may have some.
Be careful not to got too light with your bar, you won't get as good a tone, but the difference between the Jim Dunlop and the BJS will blow your mind...get down the back of the sofa for some pennies...

Another happy BJS owner here. I've used a 15/16 BJS for a few years now, easily the best bar I've used. Well worth the extra dosh IMO.

Thanks Richard - PM sent.

And hello Will! Yep, I'm plodding along happily. Had a gig last Saturday which went well - the bassist from one of the other acts let me plug the Marlen through her bass head and 2x15 cabinet, I've never heard her sing so sweetly... How's your new(ish) blue U12 treating you? Hope all's well,

Yes Tom, I'm slowly getting my head round the new U12. I echo those remarks about the bar, a nice heavy bar is good for tone!

So, for anyone interested I'm now the happy owner of a BJS John Hughey bar... And WOW. The tone difference really is unbelievable - it still has the warmth and sustain of the heavy Dunlop bar I was using, but with a beautiful crisp sharpness. And at about half the weight of the 921 it's a lot easier on my left hand! One of these days I'll pluck up the courage to put up a youtube vid or two...

Anyway, thanks everyone for the advice and contacts - really appreciate it! Happy steeling...
