this is a quote from Paul Franklin :
Tab vs music notation.....I'll say one great thing about tablature, the simplest way to get someone started playing a steel guitar is the best for the moment. The existing tabs easily jump that hurdle.......
Bo, I love the type of tab you use except for this fact.......A student would have to learn how to read to understand the notation part. Why not just teach him to read on the PSG and be done with it?
Learning by accepting Tab as the method, means students learn one specific way to play the notes, not always the best position choices. Whereas, if it were just written in notation, a player would be forced to find the easiest, or best sounding positions for the notes. The positions found would be chosen according to their ears and knowledge of the notes on the fretboard, which may not be the positions written in the tabbed part....That's a good thing because students are forced to dig deeper to learn how the instrument is played. I believe reading music notation alone would help to break their dependence on someone else for fretboard knowledge......At least that's my experience with reading notation.
