Bo, I love the type of tab you use except for this fact.......A student would have to learn how to read to understand the notation part. Why not just teach him to read on the PSG and be done with it?
Learning by accepting Tab as the method, means students learn one specific way to play the notes, not always the best position choices. Whereas, if it were just written in notation, a player would be forced to find the easiest, or best sounding positions for the notes. The positions found would be chosen according to their ears and knowledge of the notes on the fretboard, which may not be the positions written in the tabbed part....That's a good thing because students are forced to dig deeper to learn how the instrument is played. I believe reading music notation alone would help to break their dependence on someone else for fretboard knowledge......At least that's my experience with reading notation.

I like Basil's suggestion of a dual tab/notation approach. It makes real sense.

The point that Paul makes is what I was trying to make in my earlier post except that I was referencing my post about playing by ear. In actual fact, there are not many people who could score out genuinely authentic pedal steel notation because it requires someone who fully understands the capability of a pedal steel and its tunings, with some notes within chords moving up or down. (Basil H is one of those few). That's why virtually all sessions that I have done over the years have just been via chord charts, when most other instruments have had their parts written.

Right on Ken...And.. even without pedals tab can be instructive if nothing more than to learn runs in new positions.
