My new baby...

A couple of snaps of my new baby. As you can see it is a GFI S10 expo with 3 pedals and 4 knee levers. I love it, even though I have only been playing a week and am left handed!

I did a 200 mile trip from West Yorkshire to Promenade Music in Morecambe to get it. I must say I received exceptional service from them. Nothing was too much trouble and they explained it well for an absolute beginner!

All I have to do now is to learn to play it!

Good luck with your journey, and rest assured that you have a distinct advantage over a right-handed beginner. Why ? well the accuracy of your left hand bar work and vibrato will come so much easier to you. Picking with the right hand has to be learned even by right handed players, so consider that you're half way there hands-wise..as for the feet and knees, a study of a drummer's book on "Independence" would not hurt you one bit..

Having slaved away for several months now I have finally plucked up the courage to post a video. This is my first attempt and I realise that there are a few bum notes in there but I worked it out all by myself by the time honoured method of working out the tune and finding the chord inversions that held the right notes. I hope someone somewhere thinks that I am on the right track!

incidentally, Jphn .How do you find playing through a Marshall? Is it not a bit "grungy?" or do you get a nice clean tone?

I'm not sure I can tell the difference yet, Jason! It sounds reasonably clean to my ear. Perhaps the sound on the video isn't good enough to decide. The amp does have a clean input as well as a "grungy" one.

I'm a newbie too, about four months behind you, having just bought my first PSG at the ripe old age of 65. It was now or never! My guitar which is a 2nd hand ZB Custom, went straight off to Bob Adams for a service and setup as it was unplayable and I only got it back last week. He did a super job and I'm having a whale of a time learning though its going to take a while. I enjoyed your your video and downloaded the track from iTunes to have a go playing along, and nicking your licks lol! John Davis from the forum has some good videos on YouTube for E9 beginners which are really useful. I used to go to Ossett baths when I was a youngster, are they still there?

There are no public baths in Ossett now. Where were they? I've never even heard of them and I have lived here for 35 years! I have watched a lot of videos on the net for PSG. Some are excellent, including John Davies, and some are dreadful. Mickey Adams is excellent, although sometimes a bit technical. Having played ordinary guitar for 40 years plus I have a decent feel for how music works and, funnily enough, have found that the way I approached learning songs on the guitar works very well on PSG, although I am not yet at the point that I can go straight to the note I want on the E9 neck! I found that, having played through some of the Winnie Winston book and found some standard licks, after about 3 months of plugging away I started to feel as though I knew what I was doing and my right hand is now starting to find the correect strings (a great relief as I am left handed and play guitar, banjo etc left handed). I hope you find that moment as I did where you start feeling in control of the thing.
