Postby jammysteel » Wed Apr 29, 2026 2:43 pm

Hi good afternoon how are you

I am new to the site and looking at getting into pedal steel guitar. I looking at purchasing my first pedal steel and have no idea where to start. I have seen a few listing on eBay and Facebook marketplace but I have advised here is the place.

Open to lots of advice coming from a traditional 6 string player background

Funds - I do have a budget in mind but open for any stove tips etc

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts

Many thanks
James

Hi James,

I'm not making any recommendations here but you might like to have a look at the link below.
I know nothing of these guitars except from the photos in the ad.
It's very much a student guitar with 8 strings.
It has 3 floor pedals but the ad doesn't mention any knee levers.
It's a Guyatone, very much in the style of a Sho-Bud Maverick (but with fewer strings).
He's asking £650 but I can't say if it's worth that???

The link: https://www.gumtree.com/p/guitar-instru ... 510360619-

The general advice is "Buy the best pedal steel you can afford" but you're the one who knows your budget.

Hi James, I came over from the 6 string guitar about 14 years ago, John's is good advice. I started with a student steel 10 string, 3 pedals & 2 knee levers. In all honesty, I wish I had gone for something a bit more Pro at the start. It really makes a difference. I would suggest at least a 10 string, with minimum 3 pedals 4, preferably 5 knee levers. You may not use them all to begin with but as time goes on you will learn how useful they are. I currently play a 12 string ext E9 tuning, with 5 pedals and 5 knees, however I worked up to that over the years, but I use them all now.

I would advise you to not jump at the first thing that comes along, it's a big investment.
