I haven't changed the strings since I bought it from John, but I assume it has his usual SIT set fitted. But yes it might not be a bad idea to change it before anything else.

Well, that got weird. It turned out there were actually two things that were simultaneously blocking the C pedal travel in the same place. One was the machine screw. I thought replacing that would fix it, but it made no difference on its own. Eventually I realised that the hook on the pedal rod was not quite the right shape. It had scraped a little track into the inside of the cabinet and was stopping when it bit into the wood. I bent the end of the rod round a bit more and finally I have enough travel to get both changes in tune. Phew.
