The Resobird

Postby hickenjr » Thu Oct 23, 2025 8:27 pm

Hey all, after posting on social media, a few people asked me if I'd post a video of my new Resobird, so here it is!

This is a raw acoustic demo into a Sony HDR-MV1 music camera (Stereo Mics). After the demo I've also answered a few of the questions I got on social media such as the woods used.

Kind Regards, Steven Hicken Jr.

That's a really unique instrument Steven, sounds great just raw, it would be good to hear it with a bit of reverb and delay on it. Also, nice playing.

Would be good to have more info on the setup etc. Is it a standard E9 tuning with the pedals the same as a E9 neck? Does it have levers? What woods were used?

It sounds to me like a mix of pedal steel, dobro, sitar and banjo. I'd love to have one, bet you can produce some really unique sounds with it. Unfortunately I don't think my better half would be happy about me buying yet another instrument, to be fair my wee studio is already packed to bursting.

Great stuff :guitar:

Thanks Jif, much appreciated. I'm hoping to get it into the folk world and a touch of delay will definitely add a nice "fling".

Mine is a 10 string model, tuned a whole tone down to D9. To my knowledge it's mainly to do with taking pressure off the resonator cone but it also makes the tone better for the dobro sound with thicker gauges. The intervals are the same as standard though.

The changer is a pull release with 3 pedals and 4 kneelevers. Although Jimmie can also build different variations with 6 and 8 strings, and accommodate custom tunings for these.

My choices of woods are as below.

Honduran Mahogany Neck Piece
Curly Maple Top
Sapele aprons and soundbox walls
Solid Spruce soundbox lid.

I originally wanted to finish off the soundbox with a Sapele lid but Jimmie advised me to use spruce. Apparently its a Gibson acoustic guitar off cut.

It's a beautiful instrument Steven, and has a really unique sound. Is it UK built or did you have to import it from the US? I'd love to have one, can't justify it unfortunately. I'll maybe send a link to Calum, he can't resist stuff like this, then I'll borrow it once he moves on to something else  ;)

Look forward to hearing you playing it once you get going with it :guitar:

Thanks again, Jif. It was built in North Carolina by Jimmie Hudson so I had to import it.
