Define Band!

I read the listings in the local mag and am a little annoyed that clubs refer to the entertainers as a band when they are a Duo or Trio.
One club has just named a solo act as "Band of the year"
I guess that I am a little P'd that a lot of "Band" work is going to Duo's with tracks.
Did anyone see the recent re run of the BBC Alba Ceol country festival from Kelso,?A few decent bands and several solo acts one of which did not even play a guitar
Am I just a grumpy old man. GRRRRRRRRR

imo the smallest "band " would be a trio
then quartet, quintet & sextet ( my favorite cause of the chick singer....)
& then of course the "big bands "
orchestras are not bands huh ?
duos aren't either

Lin and me watched the re-runs of last years Creol Country and agree there were one or two "suspect bands" but on the whole
the show is quite good,at least the acts are actually playing not like the majority on "Hot Country" who ain't even got
leads plugged into their guitars ! believe me, I ain't knocking the show ,after all it's country music !
I would'nt say Billy was a grumpy old man just um, ugh, well, argh, where am I ? what am I doing writing here ?

define a band? well when my dad started played in the early 50s, he played in what was known as a band, and there were 18 of them, in the late 50s/early 60s groups were the "new thing" not considered as bands, but then some groups added a small brass section, were then known as showbands, then groups became known as bands, then with the advent of drum machines, sequencers and backing tracks, you end up with a "one man band" and of course one man is not a band, its just a distortion of language, i am playing with a six piece, now that is a band, not some singer, with his downloaded karaoke backing tracks, sadly though, he is earning a lot more at music than any of us "real musicians"

Being in the process of trying to establish a "Duo" with Kelly you know which way I am going >>>> yes its the economy road caused by the times we live in, the high cost of fuel (and everything else!) I used to work with a band with the hope of earning a few bob! now I do it with the hope of "breaking even!
But to mitigate my crime I will try to build my own tracks, this I am finding very hard to do with limited knowledge and the attention span of a goldfish............ but at least most of the work will be my own plus one or two I have stolen from D/h and J/H and soldier on>>>
I think we all love the buzz of working with a "proper" band but if your one of 5 or 6 then your not working as hard as a "Duo" or maybe a solo (who still has to lug that PA in set it up take it down alone) and try to keep the music interesting and engageing......... we all want a return booking??

I would agree with that Ken, except to add, i would rather work with a drum machine than a bad drummer
