I don’t think I’ve ever broken a string whilst playing but I’ve snapped a few when experimenting and being lazy about shifting bellcrank positions without slackening the nut off first. And while I do notice wound strings getting duller with grease and shit, its actually the intonation that makes me change a set of strings. Strings that are past it seem to be more temperamental about returning to pitch properly and anyway, I really enjoy changing strings for some sick reason. Only takes 5 minutes anyway.
Cheers

Mr Moordotch, after our telephone conversation today, I stand corrected, and sometimes I have even been known to sit corrected. The school I attended didn't concentrate on reading though.
Note to self. Willie must pay closer attention to the text in the posts.

This is an interesting topic, no matter what type of strings I've used over the years I don't think I've changed the gauges very much, early on I used a 0.11 on the 3rd but for at least the past 20+ yrs I've used a 0.10. I have also been using SIT strings from JD for quite a while. This is all about to change today, I received a present of a set of D'Addario NYXL strings which has a 0.12 onthe 3rd. I'm going to fit them today. I am told they are expensive, whether that means anything as regards to what I hear I have no idea, I will let you know. Donny,

Donny The NYXL strings last a long time and the good thing is they come in a hematically sealed packet which means they can be stored for ages and will remain as the day they were packaged.
At the rate I am doing gigs they may well last a few years :D

Billy I'm a bit like yourself, no gigs, and Covid has shut down the SSGW, so these strings may see me out. I have the strings on the guitar but have still to fine tune it. Might leave that till tomorrow. Stay safe. Regards, Donny.

I have the guitar set up and played in with the new strings now, they sound really nice, the harmonics are particularly bright, but would expect that with a new set of strings, need to wait and see how long the brightness lasts. I had to alter the adjustment on the 3rd string quite a bit having gone from a 0.10 to a 0.12, the pedal is also stiffer and has less travel, minor adjustments on some other pedals and levers, but nothing that affected the feel.
