Anderwood Guitars still operating?

Postby brunopietoso » Tue Sep 15, 2020 12:48 pm

Hi there everyone,

I've recently purchased a second hand Anderwood Weissenborn guitar and I was just curious to know if they are still operating as their website seems to be up and running but they never reply to emails and when searching them on Google it comes up as permanently closed.

I'm not contacting them to complain or anything, was actually looking to visiting their workshop!

Thank you!

Hi
According to Google it is permanently closed . Google is referring to it as a business listed on Google. Anyway , should you know any details, please let me know and I will alter this posting . What stings , brand/gauges /tuning are you using on your weissenborn ?

Hi Pop123,

Thanks for your reply. Will let you know once I figure it out. I've sent quite a few emails and no response. Might try giving them a call tho..

I've been mainly using open c on the LT electro acoustic and open d on the Koa L Special Edition one.

Using good old D'Addario Phosphor bronze strings 0.13's but recently purchased a couple of packs of Newtone Aloha Strings to give them a go. I like the sound of the Addarios but lacks something for me, not sure what tho.

Hello Bruno
Looks as if it just you and me ? The music retail trade has been on the slide for years . This pandemic might be the last fatal blow for many .
Matching string gauges to tunings in not an exact art . There are a number of variables that muddy water . The D'Addario EJ17 are for instruments with an average scale length tuned to E . It is not a big problem with tuning down , but the strings will lose some of their vibrancy. I have no experience of the New Tone stings . Some strings that are made for drop tunings have heavier cores. It allows the sting to have a lighter gauge at a higher tension , so retaining the vibrancy .Newtown are using a lighter cores to reduce the overall tension , you might as well just use lighter gauge strings ? I will be interested in your opinion of them.

Hi Pop123,

Yes I agree about the string gauges and experimenting with them. I must say I haven't tried as many as I would like to for sometimes not really understanding how to combine different gauges and which strings to buy or brands etc. But I hope to eventually get there. I have been playing "normal" guitar for the last 20 or odd years now but never really experimented with strings as always played with standard sets. Now that I've discovered the Weissenborn in the last few years, the journey has been a very exciting one full of new approaches.

How about you? Whats your set up? What kind of guitars, strings do you use?

Thanks!

Hi
I like to play slide guitar . You can get slide guitar strings , G tunings from Alchemy strings . I left a link in, strings and supply, below . I understand there are plans to expand the range to include strings for Weissenborn But I don't when that will happen

Sounds good, thank you.

Just restrung both guitars with the Newtone Aloha strings and must say I was not impressed. The quality control on them is not great. The 5th string on one set was basically dull and wouldn't tune and the 3rd string on another set same, so ended up keeping my old ones.

Tone wise they are OK and definitely gave the guitars a different sound than the D'addarios but I'm not sure I would buy them again

The search continues...

Hi
I have never used Newtone strings, but I'm supersized that the quality was disappointing . It is the one thing that they try to sell , high quality hand made strings . The science of guitar strings is a dark and mysterious subject . The various manufactures are reluctant to discuss their secrets and if you look into it the issues of string core ratios , it can be mind numbingly complex . The thickest plane string you can have is about .026, so thicker string need to be wound . Wound strings will give you the mass you need for the lower notes , but the tension will be dictated by the core wire . If you have the same gauge core wire in all the wound strings the tension will be the same , but as the wrap wire becomes thicker , you loose volume and resonance . So you need to increase the gauge of the core wire to compensate, it is a balancing act the get the tensions of the string feeling the same when tuned and having a similar tone and volume . So obviously newtone stings with the smaller core wire is not a success . The core wire on the a .046 string is normally around .017 . Are able to measure your newtone string?

Yeah, do I just measure it on the guitar full length? I may restring one guitar soon so maybe when I remove them will be easier

Hi
I think we are probably over thinking about a problem that should not affect you anyway . The old instruments are delicate and need the lower tension . I think Newtone's idea probably doesn't work . You can contact

https://www.alchemystrings.co.uk

and ask the about their strings .
