Pedal Steel on Sky Arts TV tonight

Postby joehw » Tue Oct 10, 2017 10:13 am

It's may not be everyone's cup of tea but as it's steel related, I thought some of you might be interested:

Back in August I performed a solo pedal steel arrangement of an instrumental David Bowie and Brian Eno track entitled "Moss Garden" at London's Union Chapel. The concert was curated by record producer Tony Visconti (David Bowie, T Rex, Morrissey... the list goes on) for a Sky Arts TV programme called Tony Visconti's unsigned heroes.

Tonight at 9pm the concert is being broadcast on Sky Arts TV. So, if you've got Sky, Virgin Media, or Now TV you'll be able to watch it. The show will consist of performances from Bob Geldof, Imelda May, Woody Woodmansey, Stuart Copeland, Nitin Sawhney, Tony Visconti and various unsigned acts.

Tonights show is the finale of a 6 part series in which Tony Visconti searches for new unsigned talent. I was fortunate enough to be selected as one of the "unsigned heroes". This was a huge surprise for me - Tony's love for the instrument was perhaps the main reason.

If anyone is interested, In episode 1 I talk about the pedal steel and how I got into playing. I know playing ambient music with loads of effects pedals is not a typical (or particularly popular) application for the instrument but I hope that my presence on this programme might introduce new people to the pedal steel.

Here's the link to past episodes:

If anyone does get to see it tonight , I hope you enjoy it.

All the best,
Joe.

Joe I'd definitely be watching if we had Sky Arts (murdoch free household!), hopefully this will be on YouTube before long. Good to see one of our lads making waves :)

By the way I'm hatching a plan with BJ to have an ambient session at the meetup on the 5th so I hope you'll be showing us how it's done.

Have fun watching tonight!

Cheers Jon!

Yeah we don't have sky either but Virgin has the channel which is lucky.

Haha I will definitely be playing second fiddle (or steel) to BJ on the ambient/experimental front.

Really looking forward to the meet in November.
