Hi mate and welcome to the world of lap steel.

One very useful book is the Mel Bay book by Dewitt Scott "Basic Non Pedal Lap Steel Method". This book is designed for C6 six string guitars and you get a CD with it as well.

Any other help you need just ask on this blog.

Good luck

Hi Mick, and thanks for the welcome.
I'm getting so much good advice on here, and will try to put it all into practice.
I've been a fan of country music for 50 years, and was a founder member of the now defunct Leicester Country Music Club.So many good bands around in those days..Kelvin Henderson,Jon Derek and Country Fever etc.I've always loved the sound of a PSG,but that's way beyond my budget,so I've settled for a lap steel instead. The first PSG player I heard was Dave"Shaky"Seddon when he played for'The Echoes of the Plains'in local Working Men's Clubs etc.
My aim is to be able to play along with my country music mp3's,but that's a long way off yet I think.

I think I've found a local-ish music tutor who doesn't teach lap steel, just slide etc;But can teach me to read Tabs along with some music theory.

It takes time.

Lots of listening but Stick with it.

If your goal is to play a few songs then tabs are fine.

If your goal is to play like your heroes playing note for note gets you there but sticks you in a box.

If your goal is freedom on ANY instrument LEARN MUSIC. heck even Buddy Emmons learnt music doesn't mean you have to sight read - which is a different skill.
Learning music means mastering your instrument. Not easy at all.

I wasted so many years jamming rock guitar saying foolishly music is too limited to rules. Only to realise music is the language in which you speak to your instrument. And it responds in the same language.

Can't stress enough music is a language learn it and tabs should be there to give you extra voicing/melody ideas.

feel free to ask for help anytime as this is one Steel family.

I fully appreciate what you're saying, the guy I'm seeing this Friday is going to teach me to read tabs, along with some music theory.
I'll have a better idea of exactly what I personally need after I've discussed it all with him.
