Melody Isolation

Postby mick hearn » Sat Aug 26, 2017 9:21 am

Just a thought but does anyone out there use any melody isolation programmes. Have found one that will separate the melody and the finished result can then be fed into an automatic staff writing programme. Have not downloaded yet but may be worth a try. Dream would be then to take the staff and feed into a tab writing programme seeing as I don't read music.

Is it a dream?

I'm not aware of any programs that do this, Mick. I believe 'Melodyne' can, somehow, get into and alter components in a stereo mix. Perhaps you could filter the top line out with that. I imagine it costs a few bob, though. I've never had my mitts on it.

I also imagine you could be entering the realm of Chinese Whispers, where, potentially, you put in, 'She Thinks I Still Care' and end up with the musical equivalent of 'She Stinks, I Wear Flares'

Good luck with the task and please let us know how you get on.

My god you are quick on that one Danny. Love the Chinese Whispers.

This is one I found. OK so the end result is not what we would expect soundwise but it is enough to feed into another score writing prog that operates from an audio source.

If I have read this correctly it can be used as a plugin to Audacity. If it all works then we could end up with a score at least. Unless of course your name is Basil who can hear something and near enough write the score as he is listening. Wish I could do that.

"Smartscore" looks likely. Its able to take a score and convert to tab for guitar. The demo's use standard guitar tuning however I did spy one pull down menu that allows selection of 6,8, or 10 string, but immediateley could not find anything to allow change of tuning. If I can sort that out it would be a bonus.

Will have to look around again later. Have downloaded the demo version so will find a song sheet to put in it. Can't save or print though. Could be good to see what its like.

If it all works then Tom Morrell here I come. Its his handful of notes that defeat me.
