I wish you all the best of luck and attendance with your proposed meetings Mick, my wife and I used to love JD's meetings and there were many attendees who just went to listen and enjoy and we miss the meetings.
Unfortunately I am more a 'builder' than a 'player' as JD can verify but dont get around much anymore ( I should maybe learn this for a signature tune  ).
It is people with the same enthusiasm as you that makes this forum and the pedal steel an interesting subject.

Best Regards
Ron Mc.

Well sorry to say I think I may have to call it a day on this one.

I thank you all for your comments and most appreciated. My biggest headache is that I know very few only through this blog, so I know nothing of the experience of the names that I see - hence all the questions at the start. I have always been out on a limb as far as steel playing is concerned as there are so few in this area, and my learning has been blundering along on my own. No-one to ask "how do you --?" I did ask some time ago if anyone would be interested in a regular Suffolk meet similar to South London Steelies but the reponse was zero. And yes Suffolk is out on a limb.

I shall be off to the South of England Festival next month so may meet some of you there and I am well looking forward to it. I was surprised when Ken posted the fact that last year he only had three responses to the event and perhaps that should have given me a clue. But - never mind - it was worth a try. Perhaps at these events there should be a questionaire to hand in at the end so that organisers can see any plus points or grumbles.

Right - onwards and upwards. I dropped my external hard drive last week and nothing was recoverable - all Cubase and Band in a Box stuff. Had to download Band in a Box which took 22 hours and then a long long time installing. Now trying to put my backing tracks together for the event. And no, nothing was backed up therefore ALL my music covering several years has gone. What a prat. Have now got two hard drives just in case.

Once again thanks for your comments.

Well done for trying anyway Mick. Nothing ventured, nothing gained as JD knows only too well. :)

Actually Mick, last year's South of England Festival wasn't of my doing. I was made aware of it just a fortnight in advance, and decided to go along at the last minute. Yes just 3 of us turned up (me and the 2 organisers), which was very disappointing but understandable given the lack of dedicated promotion. However, even with just the 3 of us I still enjoyed it. This year I have helped to promote the event with Ron Kew and Digby Hardy, as they were close to pulling the plug on the event because of the poor turnouts in previous years. With decent advanced planning through social media and this site, this year's event now has a great number of players who have pledged to perform and that is really great. In my humble opinion, any social event is about the 2 'P's'. Planning and Promotion.

It's unfortunate that you have decided not to progress with the Suffolk thing. I am looking forward to meeting and hearing you next month at Bristol, and maybe the event will give you the impetus to look again at running something next year. It's not all about the playing at these events - half the fun is the networking plus exchanging ideas and information. :D ;)

Mick, in all probability I can recover your lost files from the dropped drive.

Mick, I'm sorry to see I missed this thread entirely, or I would have contributed. FWIW, Suffolk is close enough to home for me that I would have loved to attend. We'll meet up again at Bristol in 3 weeks or so, but I would echo the encouragement you have received from others. Yes, Jason had a point about "others playing over" but that's just lack of proper MC'ing.

If this thread is still alive, I'd like to add my thoughts.
I'm relatively new to pedal steel (6 years), thanks to a Sho-Bud I bought from John Davis. I now play a Ben-Rom.
I'm self-taught (and it shows!).
I went to the last Great Barford session that John arranged (2012). I went without my steel guitar as I'd just had surgery and couldn't carry the guitar.
On the day I recognised that John was carrying quite a responsibility for maintaining discipline, keeping everyone interested, choosing the tunes/learning etc and he did it with great aplomb.
Despite having no guitar, I took some paper notes and tabbed out a couple of things. Raining in My Heart was one of the tunes John presented - and I still play it pretty much as he described.
I was then responsible for setting up the South London group, where we pretty much played 'round robin' tunes to a BIAB backing. Ok as far as it went... but not much learning. Matt Park was a regular attender in the early days and I don't think we utilised his skills and knowledge enough. I remember asking him to explain his set-up and I thought there was a lot we could have picked up from him, but 'learning' didn't seem to be what people wanted.
I then moved up north and after a while arranged to meet with Tony Russell Davis, Keith Glendenning and Derek Evans in a regular session at the Buck Inn. They all were regulars at the annual North East Steel Guitar Festival, held each August at the same venue. Again, the main focus in our group meetings is on 'round robin' tunes played to backing tracks.
I have also attended one NESGF annual 'bash' at the same venue, where players have a 20 minute 'slot' to play their own 'party pieces' to their own backing tracks. There are some fantastic players at these events.
However, (and what I'm really getting round to) is what I want from a session with more experienced players is to come away with some improvement in my playing. I get a little of this in our regular meetings, but I got nothing from the annual event. Yes it's great to hear good players, but with no opportunity to learn from these players, it seemed to me to be a pretty redundant experience. I can hear great players via my own CD collection or YouTube.
The best experience for me was the Great Barford session - and I didn't even have a a guitar with me! Seminars, led by an experienced player willing to share his knowledge and experience, leading a session with some discipline and expectation of 'good behaviour' must surely be the best way forward for beginners and more experienced players alike, in my opinion. There is some mileage in the regular meetings playing along to backing tracks (although there is a lot more we could do to share how we each approached a tune, voicings, grips, pedals up or down etc) but what leaves me a bit cold is the annual 'showcase' - it's a bit sterile, like going to an art gallery - look, but don't touch.
I recognise and acknowledge the great contribution people make towards making any of these events a success.
I'd love to go to Dallas one year (fat chance!) but I wouldn't want to sit all day listening to players, no matter how good they were! At least there would be product stalls, manufacturers etc to enjoy and to break the monotony.
That's my two-pennyworth. I hope it provokes some debate.

I'm pretty much in agreement Nick. Sorry for being so harsh a critic of earlier meetings but like you, I feel I want to come away with something worthwhile.
Ok here's a thought- how many experienced players on here that can or do teach would be willing to put there name down for a seminar style meeting. Say, half an hour minimum. Any takers? Thoughts?

Hi Nick - If you were to go to Dallas, I bet that you would find the show anything but monotonous.
