Accepting a gig ?

Postby Zumbilly(Murdoch) » Tue Jul 12, 2016 6:28 pm

I wasn't quite sure how to title this thread.
Very few,if any steel players are gigging every week, most of the guys I know can go for weeks without a gig, so depping or playing with a band other than Your "own" band is common.
If another band asks YOU to play with them do You accept the gig and keep Your word or do You make it clear that if Your regular band get a job on the same date You will have to cancel
The problem has never arisen with Me but I would honour the first entry in My diary.

That's a good moral dilemma Billy. I suppose that it really boils down to how permanent the 'own' band set up is. If you tell the dep band that you would have to decline the gig if one comes in with the regular band, you could end up with no gig at all. :o

These days I hedge my bets and play with 3 different bands. Once a gig is in the diary that's it. Cast in stone. I did a gig recently with a 4th band that I have never played with before. It was great.

I would say that morally you are right in honouring the first gig in your diary. A gig is a gig for a steel player, and they are getting less easy to come by each year. ;)

Integrity is the eighth wonder of the world...and certainly not possessed by all!!!

On the flip side of this coin.... my other half some time back worked for months with a junior choir in London.

She has 'a voice' and an amazing talent for counterpoint; holding a melody against others singing something completely different that interlocks.

After months of practice and rehearsal the finished article was excellent! (I heard the recording.) Moving stuff!

However, prior to the event to be held in the Millenium Stadium Cardiff.... the little 'MC person' running the show was in contact with Cathrine Jenkins! and Yip! .. she did the gig!

No blame on CJ or her reported net worth of $21m only on the morals of that little MC. I am sure you get the parallel !

If you are a man of integrity .... 'Your Word' should be 'Just That'! ..... Respect!
