Peterson Strobo Flip Tuners?

Postby Dave Nutt » Sat Feb 12, 2011 5:12 pm

Interested to know what you guys use for tuning? The Peterson Strobo Flip seems to be the way forward for many.
I have a 25/30 year old Korg tuner that has served me well, however reading about the Strobo Flip gets me wondering what is to be gained using the more modern technology. The presets certainly seem a usefull addition.
How many of you use a Peterson? points for? against?

Dave.

Dave,
I used a Boss T.U.12 for many years after My Korg was stolen,I always thought I was in tune :) I am first to admit that My ears are well battered and the day they gave musical ears out I was at the end of the line.I got cloth ones :)
I got a Peterson a few years ago and have never looked back,I now have an "in tune guitar" which I still manage to play out of tune :)
I eventually got a Peterson Flip and find it excellent, silent tuning which is not affected by stage noise and bang on accuracy.I use the presets only and it works for Me. I once put it in line with My gear and it caused distortion which was an early fault which Peterson were rectifying for free but I did'nt really find it a drawback and since My guitar rarely needs re-tuning, I get by with a quick check at the end of a set.I do'nt use the power supply at all and the batteries last a long time,You can set the tuner to turn itself off after a given time so if You inadvertantly leave it on, the batteries will not go flat.
I would certainly buy another if I lost this one.

i too am interested in this thread as both of my tuners[which are only cheap korgs] give me different readings, one says im in tune the other says im not, so i tend to get it as close as i can then use my ear which is failing as the years go by!

if i may, it's important to know how to tune naturally via harmonics first
before tuners were around, that's what steelers used to tune up
once you know how to do it, you can write down the values of each string, lever & pedals ,whether you use a needle tuner or a peterson
considering that "cabinet drop " is not the same on all psgs, the values differ from one to another
the advantage of the peterson is that you can program your values into it
if doing that is above your head, then the "sweetened presets " for E9 & C6 on the peterson will get you close
the stroboflip seems to be most popular due to it's price compared to the stroborack
with both, you can tune most stringed instruments too
i use the stroborack, am quite content & have not looked back BUT
i still tune basically via harmonics when i'm at home or in a quiet environment

I have a chromatic tuner on my iPhone, and am ashamed to admit that's all I use till I can afford a strobo-flip! Works for me though. As long as the room is quiet......

I find that the main advantage in using the stroboflip is that it makes tuning considerably faster. Having said that, I still find myself making a few small adjustments by ear to finish off.

Dave
I use a Strobo Flip. I have got 6 or 7 tuners all told including a couple of rack mounts (one in my studio and one in a live rack). The Peterson tuner is good in as much that it has pre-sets for both E9 and C6 temperment tuning. Allegedly, Jeff Newman got Lloyd Green to tune his own LDG guitar as perfectly as he could, and then took readings of it with the Peterson tuner. He saved the readings and it is the E9 Newman Sweetner tuner setting. I use it, and the C6 Newman Sweetner setting for convenience, and they work for my old ears.

In principle the Peterson Stroboflip is very accurate, but my other chromatic tuners do the job but in a different way.

Downside of the Strobo-Flip is that you get a slight distortion from it if you plug straight in and out of it into an amp, unless you get a diode remove from the internal workings. I haven't bothered with that.

If you can, try one out first to see if you get on with it.

I just dont get it? in tune is in tune is it not? and surely if you set your guitar up right the different chord inversions are in tune? what am i missing re tempered tuning? i know that some players are saying 'oh my pitch is not great' etc etc well i will tell you this, i tune up with my korg pitchblack pedal tuner, and i know i sound in tune, cos my pitch is good, i dont mean to sound conceited or anything, im just saying i dont understand the fuss about peterson strobe tuners, sweetened tunings etc, is it just a fashion acessory like the Hilton VP Pedal i used to own? that actually spoiled my tone by making it too clinical, or the mesa boogie boutique combo i bought that wasn;t a patch on my fender amp? someone might explain? and with respect, how can you love a tuner? you could like it cos it never lets you down, but its just functional, thats what it is supposed to do, and as an added advantage, my korg pitchblack tuner, when powered from the mains into a standard 9v transformer, powers up my other seven 9v pedals, very quietly and efficiently, :guitar: :guitar: :guitar:

Actually no, tuning is not just tuning. With the possible exception of the octave, what we find to be in tune is a learned response, not an absolute that we are born with. Equal temperament, which is the generally accepted system in the western world, took over two hundred years to gain acceptance because people thought it sounded 'out of tune'. I suspect that many of us started out tuning purely by ear, all we had when I started was either a tuning fork or a set of pitch pipes and for some time during the 80's & 90's I tuned harpsichords by ear, in various temperaments; but a good tuner like the Peterson certainly makes things easier, especially as we get older and our hearing becomes less sharp.
