Best Effects Unit Pedal Steel

Postby Jay » Fri Mar 25, 2016 10:34 pm

Hi Guys, I’m a newbie here on the forum just finding my way around, I haven’t played steel for quite a while now , gone a bit rusty but started practicing again and hope to have it out on the gigs in a few months, I would like to get some advice from players out there on their recommended effects unit for pedal steel, I’ve used a fender twin before with its reverb which was ok but unreliable, at least mine always seemed to stop working after a few gigs, always had to carry a spare reverb unit for it. Tried an Alesis Microverb for a while which was fairly good but it too could be temperamental , appreciate any suggestions!

I've used Boss for quite a while and have a DD3 and a DD5to choose from. Something like that should replace the duff reverb pretty well?
Lately I've been going through a Digitech multi FX, (the floor unit one with two built in footswitches but using only one setting) through a power amp (a "spare" White's PA amp just now) into a Telonics 15" speaker. The Digitech has all the EQ and effects I need so the power amp is set flat. In the house I use ear phones straight from the unit. I think it cost me £25 or less. :guitar: :guitar:
Fender SM T-8: Shakey 10-plank: Ricky 6: Harmony H7 R Smeck,: plus "home-mades"
Fender D-10: Sierra D-11:
Resos- Goldtone 8 string & Regal 7
FenderTwin: Peavey Delta Blues: Marshall AS50R: DigiTech>GK MB200->Telonics 15"

I now use a Benado steel dream which has three effects, Reverb,Delay and drive. It is not cheap but in My opinion very good indeed.
Prior to that I was using a Wet Reverb,(look for the demo on U tube) This is probably the best stand alone pedal I have encountered.Delay pedals are definitely subjective, lots of players love the Boss DD3, I like the Wampler Faux delay, Look for the demo on U tube.
Hope this helps.

Check out Digitech RP150 or 155, the reverb/delay in the unit is Lexicon, so is top quality, these units are relatively cheap and can be picked up used at exceptionaly cheap prices. The Behringer range are cheap clones of the Boss and work well, but can be problem to repair, but at the price they sell for just bin it and buy a new one ( last one I had lasted four years and was still working when I gave it away).
MSA Millennium SD1O, GK MB200,Sica 12 and Telonics 15 speakers , Joyo American Sound pre amp, Jay Ganz Straight Ahead 500w class D Amp, Hilton pedal, Peterson tuners,Digitech RP150,Scott Dixon seat/ flight case.

I use a Zoom MS70cdr ( chorus/delay/reverb) designed for keyboards but works perfectly on steel either after the expression ( volume) pedal or send and return on amp. Excellent unit for the price, programmable, works on psu. or batteries .
Mullen Custom Discovery, Quilter Mach 3 with Celestion bn-300s, Peavey Nashville 112 with Celestion bn-300s, Telonics Multi taper, Lehle Mono 90, Zoom MS70, Peterson Strobostomp.

Dispatch Master from Earthquaker Devices does good reverb and delay, this tiny unit replaces the rather large Digitech RP200 I used to use. I love it because it's so small and doesn't get in the way. It's smaller than the Boss units. I can't comment on its longevity, I've only had it a year, but I think it would be hard to beat. Depends on your budget I guess.

For years I used Digitech RP series 100, 150 and 155, then a few months ago I saw a guy on lap steel using a Zoom MS-100BT and it sounded great so I found a store on the internet that was selling them for £69 so I bought one and it is brilliant, so many different effects and it is no bigger than a boss pedal. You can use it for ages on two AA batteries even. It has amp simulators aswell but I don't use them. Also there are many more effects that you can get via bluetooth, not that you'd ever need them either. There is plenty of info about these on the net. For steel I think Derek has got the best one though, the MS70CDR.

Thanks all for the reply's . The Boss DD3 and a DD5 seems quite popular but from all of your suggestions here it seems that that there is lots of other options that are just as good, definitely try some of them, on a different note I'm on the lookout for a Shobud LDG if any one knows of one for sale, Really appreciate your help :) Jay

Just one thing I forgot to mention, has anyone tried the Rockett boing reverb pedal, I heard a couple of players mention them but never actually heard them working, seem fairly pricey too!

I use to have different effects all over the floor, now I use my two Roland cube 80XL's with JBL E120's fitted just use the built in effects on one of the amps the other one just gives extra muscle.... one good thing about this rig if one amp goes down ( its never happened yet) I always have the other one to finish the night....
