The Lost Chord

Postby Zumbilly(Murdoch) » Sun Feb 21, 2016 8:13 pm

All of us will be familiar with the "James Bond theme"
The wonderful chord at the end (to My ears) is E G# C Eb The C note would indicate an augmented whilst the top Eb would suggest a Maj 7th.
Question 1 Am I hearing the chord correct ?
Q 2 What is the name of the chord ?
Q 3 Is it possible to play on a pedal steel with standard set up. I can,so far only manage a triad leaving the root E out.
No great importance to know this but I thought it may stretch a few brains out there. It may be a fun chord to insert now and again.
Best regards

Hi Billy - answer to question 2. It's a polychord Em(maj9). Em with a major 9th on top. 8-) ;)

Hi Billy
From the bottom of the chord upwards the notes are E – G – B – Eb – F# - E. I would guess that you are trying to get the chord on your E9 neck, so I will have a look when I go into my studio this afternoon. Most of the notes are available on your open E9 tuning apart from the G note which can be obtained if you have a split on your 6th string. ;)

Having tried a few inversions, the only way that I can get close to the film chord is by doing what I suggested and lowering the 6th string to G via a split on the 12th fret, and strumming from string 8 to 1 fairly quickly while muting the 3rd string in front of the bar. All the required notes are there, but not quite in the right order. :?

I seem to remember that chord being used on the end of a Dire Straits track, their first album - was it "Down to the Waterline"? Been a long time since I last heard it, but it's very distinctive.
