How many members use an Ipad

Postby Zumbilly(Murdoch) » Thu Oct 01, 2015 9:51 am

About a year ago I did a gig with a guy who uses tracks (ugg) I did it as a favour since His partner was unwell.
His set included a lot of songs I was not familiar with and He had two ipads which were linked,I used one and when He started the song(s) the words and chords scrolled, in time down the screen, not quite like Kareoke but I guess You'll know what I mean.
I found it to be a great tool and very easy to follow and play songs I had never heard before.
I think this would be great for new songs where I often find difficulty remembering the structure and even the melody when given only a short time to learn(at home) The ipad can be clipped to the leg of the pedal steel and Voila ! I have instant memory !!
Whilst I would probably use an ipad for all the regular web browsing and e mail stuff I wonder if the £outlay is good value if I am looking mainly at one use.
I would welcome any info and advice on which model I would be best purchasing. Is there a benefit in getting a New(recent) model or would a cheaper (used) older model suffice?
My next question would be How do You install and save song words and chords on a page which will scroll in time?
I was brought up when Ships were made of wood and men were made of iron so the quantum leap(for Me) has been a non event.
Thanks for any help.

Billy, although I don't have one myself, I see these in action all the time and my opinion is that they are excellent pieces of kit. As with any computer related purchase I would suggest getting the best/most up to date version possible because a week after you buy it, it will probably be out of date!
As for inputting lyrics/chords etc., there are apps galore that make this very easy. They really are impressive machines. For the musically inclined the capabilities are huge. Mr McMaster, pedalling out of Beith, records his steel on it, with great results I'm the only member of my family without the said gadget, being more of a jotter type.
All the best.

Billy,
I have an App called GuitarTapp Pro on my iPad which does exactly as you've described. You can search on song title or band/singer and then make your own set list. Transposing keys is no problem. Scrolling can be speeded up or slowed to your preference, ie for practising or playing.
Another App is iRealPro which is similar to BIAB. It's not as powerful as BIAB and the choice of intruments isn't too wide, but at around £5.00 it's a winner. There are over 2000 tracks available in different categories, or you can input your own by simply writing in the chord names.
Hope this helps,
Keith.

Just another thing about the iPad.
The inbuilt camera is very useful when you're practising as it can be attached to a mic stand for recording. The mic is acceptable for home use, but if you want a better sound there's a small clip-on Condenser job made by Samson which gives much better results.

Many thanks for the early replies Gents.
The info is much appreciated. I will certainly be having a look in the charity shops for the latest version.
Mr Gamble, if the unit You have on offer will make Me play like You,then send the Bockus over post haste.
Just for clarity ...Mr Gamble and Myself speak in dyslexic terms in order to thwart eavesdroppers. A bockus is a box in real talk.
Thanks again.

Hi Billy
What I think you're looking for is the app, SetListMaker. It was what I used latterly in the band. I had hoped that our esteemed singer would get one too so that we wouldn't have to scrabble round looking for a piece of paper and a pen that worked to write up our set-list, or fumble round in th dark trying to read the one you had put on the floor by your steel .

Use this link to find tutorials about what the app can do - http://www.arlomedia.com/apps/setlistma ... arted.html

Regarding words, music or tab, if you can convert it to PDF, you can import it.

Regarding scrolling, you'd need an add-on piece of kit

Billy, I used an app called DD Gigbook for our set lists when I played with City Sinners, I had song title , format eg Key, intro , chords , fills, any notes I had added etc, so I knew when lead player was filling or me, saved playing over each other. As Danny said I use Garage band via Irig to record, I record BIAB track on to one track then can record steel track on an other, useful for practice, let's me hear how crap I have played it.
