Peavey Nashville 112 very poorly

Postby STEDDIE EDDIE » Sun Jan 09, 2011 12:03 pm

I was in mid gig last night, and after almost 5 years of sterling service, my N112 just Died on me, and ended up putting the guitar and steel through the P.A. thankfully i was able to put the two instruments via an A/B /Y switch i always carry with me, into a BOSS GT 10 guitar processor, which has built in pre amps and of course reverbs/delays so it got me nicely through the gig, in fact a few punters actually commented afterwards on the good sound, but that could have been drink talking, i just missed my backline, have borrowed a peavey bandit, which will get me though tonights gig,
but it has forced my hand now, to travel to Manchester this week, to collect an amp i bought some months ago but never got it over to Ireland, it is a Musicman rd 150w 2 x 10 twin channel combo, sounded great with a ZB Custom into it several months ago, i will NOT have this amp couriered as it is a tube powered amp with a lot of glass in the back, and would only do so if i had personally packed and boxed this amp, and it brought it home to me this morning, just how far and wide my gear is scattered at this moment in time, apart from my amp in Manchester, my ZB is somewhere between Belfast and Glasgow, en route from Ted to Bob, for a copedant change, and i have a G & L Legacy [strat] somewhere between California and Ireland, will be nice to gather all my gear together, i will leave my sick N112 in Manchester for repair, always handy to have an amp in England, just like to thank Ted Nesbitt for the loan of a Sho bud LDG, while my ZB is getting sorted, He is a true Gent, and also like to thank Bob Adams for being able to do the work on the ZB for me, it was kinda sprung on him at short notice, and i know he is an extremely busy man, and as regards working on ZBs, i am told they are extremely complicated machines, and there is a saying here in Ireland which is very apt for Bob, 'NO BETTER MAN FOR THE JOB'

I'm looking at gettign a new amp and I've been thinking about a Music Man.

I initially started looking at a 12" or 15" speaker cos I've got a 12 string on the way and I thought it would handle the bass better, but I've recently read that a pair of 10" speakers might be pretty good for this? (I had assumed that lower notes required bigger speakers)

Any opinions on this (Music Man amps, speaker sizes good for steel 10 or 12 string and any general advice for a first time steel amp buyer?!)

cheers,

Henry

p.s. Bob Adams - your rig at John's last meet sounded great and looked quite portable too, what was the amp you were using?

Henry, i have never gigged an amp with 10" speakers, but based on what i heard with a ZB through my MM amp, albeit in a shop, i am very confident they will handle the heavy low frequencies of a steel guitar, and a few other reasons being, Ken Byng named a high profile american who uses the same MM amp as mine, his name escapes me, also a pair of 10s will handle more weight and give a much better spread of sound than a single 12", ask the many bass players who choose to use the 4 x 10" cabs on there own, plus in my particular amp, a 150 watt valve power amp, which WILL be far louder than a solid state 200 watter, the 10's have to be able to handle that massive power, BUT! when i get the combo over, i'll be ble to tell you after i have gigged it, the proof will be in the pudding!
i have always favoured the 12" speaker over the 15" speaker, because i have always found the 12 much more responsive, and less floppy than the 15, and i have owned JBL's and black widow 15's, but this is just my opinion, but based on actual gigging experience, i know there are one or two steelies on this forum who have experienced different speaker options, and it would be nice if they responded to your questions re the same, we may get a few different opinions, but thats fine,
as for Musicman amps, they are great , powerful, clean tone monsters, i used to own a 2 x12 with JBL's in it, just couldn't lift the flippin' thing,

VERY NAUGHTY PEAVEY NASHVILLE 112 MORE LIKE, since my amp went down during that gig, i have had it on soak test at home, it worked fine, i have gigged it, and it was fine, i remember when it did stop working, i was just increasing the master gain, was quite a loud gig, it never went fully off, just lost most of its power and was distorting, could this be a sign of the output transformer not coping? on its way out? its a mystery, been on soak test 24 hours now, and its working fine, i know it wasnt the leads, as i pulled out my spare leads, anyway, im collecting the Musicman from Manchester next week, and ill let you know how i get on with it Henry,

Eddie
Randy Beavers is a great lover of Music Man amps, and I am given to understand that he has a 2 x 10" version among his collection. I have played through one of the 2 x 10" amps, and they have more bottom end than you would first think.

Anyone coming to my meeting on Sunday will get a chance to listen to my latest amp/speaker rig, I think its the best I have ever had (and I have tried most of`em!) Its a newish built (2 years old) Fender twin top built to 1965/6 circuit and playing through 2 X 1X12 cabs with JBL E120 speakers rated at 300 watts each........ the three bits take up a little more space than the twin on its own and take a little longer to set up but IMHO its worth the effort.... The E120 JBL range is getting rare as hens teeth but if you see one please grab it for me (I will pay a fair price....... 8-) :guitar: :guitar:

Eddie, did the amp simply get too hot? I'm not sure if there's a thermal cut-off on Peaveys but maybe you were pushing the amp hard and the ventilation at the gig wasn't good. I haven known amps of mine to stop working until they cooled down.

Ken, yes i found the 2 x 10 MM had loads of bottom end, but not had it in a gig situation yet, just in the shop with a ZB through it, will let you know next week

John, contact my good mate in Rochdale, Lancs he is called Bonnar and owns Bonecat Music, has all things Fender, Musicman, JBL, Gauss, EV, Burns, etc etc, not got the shop number to hand, but his partner Christine [crispy] is on mobile 07970668331 tell her 'Eddie long face' put you in touch, i bet he has what you want

Paul, i think you have hit the nail on the head, when i think back, it was a pub gig, amp was on the seat with a back on it, and i stuffed my cover in at the back of the amp, so maybe the poor amp couldnt breathe properly, although they are vented on top, so maybe its not 'naughty peavey' but 'naughty Eddie'??????????????? just off to your neck of the woods now Paul, heading to play at the Athlone springs hotel, im sure you know it?
