On Sunday afternoon my son Fraser was playing in a bar in Glasgow with a band called The Veranda Band, I was helping him in with his gear and the first person I met was Danny Mitchell, who is one of the guys from the Scottish Steel Guitar Workshop.
When we had exchanged pleasantries, such as "what are you doing here" I found a seat with my wife, and settled down ready to enjoy the afternoons music, Danny arrived at the table and said to me " That's it sorted you're playing steel this afternoon" I was a bit taken aback, but soon recovered and played the gig.
The reason for telling you all of this is this, I have never really liked GFI guitars, purely in a cosmetic sense, I just could not see past their looks, but after having played Danny's guitar on Sunday, I have had a complete change of heart, what a pleasant surprise it was, Superb sustain, beautiful action on both pedals and levers, and very stable tuning. all in all a fantastic instrument which I would earnestly recommend to anyone out there thinking of buying a new guitar, but only if you can't afford a Mullen of course.

You said the same about my MSA, until you played it.And actually your statement should read buy a GFI or Mullen,only if you can't afford an MSA.
ps I liked Danny's GFI when I tried it at Gartcosh, did he fit wooden blocks on pedals so your wee legs could reach them?

Many years ago I spent an afternoon in Bobbe Seymour's store, and he had a consignment of GFI's delivered. We carried them from the transporter into his store, and he broke open one of the cartons and opened the case. He spent 10 - 15 minutes showing me the undercarriage, pullers, changer and construction. He said "These are the best designed all pull guitars that money can buy".

Then he put the legs and rods in it and spun it over. He said "These are the ugliest all pull guitars I've ever set my eyes on, don't ya think?". He reckoned that if Gene Fields had made the GFI to be more cosmetically appealing they would be the biggest selling pedal steels of all time as they also had great tone. Straight from the horse's mouth.

The old saying is this. If you can't afford a decent pedal steel, buy an MSA.

What a pleasure it was to perch myself alongside Willie and listen to him absolutely tearing through 2 sets of unfamiliar songs. My set up sounded great, now if only I can make it sound like that. I cunningly thought I could observe his moves but, being unfamiliar with the songs myself, I was too busy looking at the chords scrawled in my 70's faded notepad. A great wee jam was had!

And, yes Malcolm, we lowered the seat! But then again I do favour a 'high' position to accommodate my idiosyncratic left leg manoeuvres. BTW, glad to see you back posting after your op. Hope you're well.

Biggles, is there any truth in the rumour that MSA stands for My Sore Ar@e, because listening to you going on about your plastic guitar gives me a right royal pain there
